  • YSK The US Government has a Webpage for New Fathers to Find Dad Jokes
  • ook_the_librarian ook_the_librarian 8mo ago 100%

I actually love that we have resourses like this.

My gripe is that they miss the mark by targeting new dads. The reason dad jokes are great is they are the first jokes your kid understands. So I would think dads of 4 to 9 year-olds would be a better target.

The high you feel when your kid cracks up at some offhand dumb joke can't be bottled.

But the reason I love this as a resourse is that explaining jokes to a curious child develops connections in their head in a way that only a parenting rolemodel can really do. So even if it's not laugh-out-loud funny to explain a joke, if your child tells you that they do not get a joke, first and foremost realize that is a vunerable admission. Buddies will rag on you for not getting it. Parents see a gap in their kids' world experience that they can fill.

This can't help in the short term, I would consider learning steno. It used to cost thousands to rent specialized equipment to do it. Now with Plover (foss), the software component is free. You just need a keyboard with n-key rollover to do it.

I wouldn't actually recommend learning on a standard keyboard. I personally use an ortholinear for typing, and that's what got me into plover.

One way this would help one disabilities to make money is that with high-speed internet, you can caption internet broadcasts or remote company meetings. There are nonprofits that you would work for to find companies that need your service.

On the other hand, he hasn't done a debate so far for this presidential race

It is way too early for R vs. D debates. Why would Biden debate him? Biden is handily beating Dean Phillips. Trump needs to defeat Haley first. It's not Biden fault Haley is still in it.

  • I thought I would knock some dust off my drafting skills after a small chat with @captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works Seeing [this image](https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/freecad-workbenches.png) on [the tutorial](https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/freecad-basics/#Working_with_FreeCAD) made me realize, FreeCAD seems to be a Technical Geometry Super-Suite. It makes sense that CAD would grow to include all of these things. But I thought sharing the initial perspective of some one who hasn't looked at this stuff in about 18 years might be interesting. Granted I'm not actually familiar with most of this stuff, and none of it from the POV of FreeCAD. If this can deliver 10% of what I'm looking at, I'm in for a treat.

I would like to at least post the bright spots to encourage engagement in this community. Recently, I've been failing, but I don't want this community (I wish lemmy used a less generic word than "community") to fail with me. Please feel free to make posts here. I am curious how you out there in the fediverse engage with Dan and Jordan's respective POVs. Of course, lurkers are free to lurk, but I don't want to feel like this is _my_ community just because I am a resident KF superfan. I'm just willing to remove hate speech for you folks. I want to be a mod, not a leader. I want to hear your voices, not just feedback. But feedback is a great place to start chatting. I will get back in the swing of things soon and will be able to make routine posts. This post started as an apology (and it is) but I rambled and I wanted to hear from our still small lemmy/c. (I think lemmy/c is what i'll call a lemmy community until someone says something better.)

In the side panel, I use the suggestion of #75 simply because that was on knowledgefight.com. But honestly, so much has changed. That was before the TX & CT awards were found by the juries. That was before the default judgements. That was before Covid. What episodes are good to start with for a more updated Zeitgeist? The ones that are too current, I feel Alex is a little too pathetic for anyone to care.

I was hyping the podcast in a [c/politics thread](https://lemmy.world/post/10949897) when someone asked for a link for a pizzagate debunking. They made the interesting point that most debunkings are merely "there is no basement". I must confess. I find this argument pretty compelling, but are there any deep-dives into the conspiracy origins from KF. Due to what I confessed, I never really followed the details of this one. It seemed to morph into QAnon conspiracies rather seamlessly. It seemed to be all claims, no known damages. What immediately came to mind is [Episode #39](https://knowledgefight.libsyn.com/knowledge-fight-jack-posobiecya-busted) in which Dan does a deep-dive into Jack Posobiec and analyzes the Comet Ping Periscope video that Owen Shroyer reports about. (No, I didn't have the episode number off the dome.) But that is more Jack Posobiec is full of shit because pizzagate is full of shit. I love this episode. But the periscope video is more about two infowariors' total inability to "act natural". But it's not really a pizzagate debunking, I suppose. Still comedy gold in my opinion.

    Crazy Ideas ook_the_librarian 9mo ago 80%
Election candidates should have to conduct all business online and under a freshly-created "election handle"

For the sake of concreteness, let's take the Joe Biden registering to run in the 2024 Democratic Primary. He signs up and is asked for an election handle, aka username, screenname, whatever. He tries "joe biden" but that is taken, as is "joebiden"... So yada yada yada, he settles on "joe4unions" or maybe something a professional would come with, but we'll go with "joe4unions". Here's the Crazy Idea: New election rule. Candidates may never claim to be their handle; the handle cannot claim to be the candidates. The handle can link data, post anonymized stump speeches, name-drop ("jack kennedy was a friend of mine. and user4164, you're no jack kennedy."), whatever. joe4unions can insist he will run the country just like Joe Biden, but he can't say anything that, had joe4unions not really been Biden, could be considered fraud. Chaos Online Primaries ensue to get the top 10 candidates. Remember, they actually had to register in person. There were eligibility checks . So it's not open-internet signups, but it's not far off. there could be admin-level policing (DNC) so all the Dean Brownings of PA can't be lying out there. Now online voting doesn't exist (yet?) so I don't have some kinks worked out. I hope no one was here for something well-thought out. Now top 10 candidates chosen by Jan 2024 can now run the "normal" process. What do you think? have fun hating my idea!
