I deleted my account as part of the Great Reddit Exodus of 2023 but have periodically visited the site since without an account.

Many of the posts I see now seem really sensationalist and almost like they were created by bots. Of course, maybe Reddit was always that way and it just some time being away for me to realize that.

I really just need the audio. I’ve watched older Trek so much that I’ve half-memorized the dialogue. It would be nice just to have the audio in the background while I’m working.

  • For a while now I have been wanting to play old episodes of TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT in the background in Spanish during the day to passively brush up on my Spanish. Paramount Plus doesn't offer these shows with Spanish audio in the US, which is very odd considering that the US has the second-highest number of Spanish speakers in the world. I also tried getting a Mexican Paramount Plus account and VPNing in, which worked for a little while until they removed all older Trek content from Paramount Plus in Mexico. I'd really hate having to resort to DVDs and/or BluRays, but at this point that looks like my only option. Before doing that, I thought I'd ask here and see if anyone has any other recommendations.

It looks like Lemmy.world communities do not get regularly indexed on search engines. Is this because of the system architecture, or is it for some other reason?

Buy a used travel trailer, hire someone with a truck to transport it for you. You can find rv parks with lot fees for 500-600 month plus electric.

Great pictures! It's amazing what they were able to create so long ago with the tools that they had available at the time.

  • I've been thinking about getting a travel trailer for some long trips for my family of 3, plus a small dog. The Airstreams look open inside, and I like the relatively low dry weight as well as the resale value. The only thing is that new models have gotten extremely expensive. Are they worth this extra cost, and how easy are they to tow? We are thinking of something along the lines of a Flying Cloud model.

Thanks for reminding everyone of this. The gas savings over time will probably end up being the same, or less, than a starter on an older vehicle. Of course, if you're not planning on keeping the vehicle until it dies, this is less of an issue for you.

The dog we adopted doesn't do well with other dogs. He was a stray pickup, so I think he may be been on the streets for a little while and something happened with some other dogs. He's perfectly

I deleted my Reddit account as well. People deleting 10-year-plus accounts will make a larger statement than a couple of days of silent subs.

Reddit has control over granting mod access to new people for rebellious subs. It doesn't have control over my use or non-use of the platform.

Adopting an animal? The local animal shelter is probably your best bet.

My daughter wanted a dog, so I spent a few months researching breeders, animal shelters, and rescues because I saw quite large price differences among these three options for adopting an animal. It seems like since Covid, animal breeders charge between double and quadruple what they did pre-Covid. It also seems like general animal health, shots, spay/neutering, etc. varies a lot. My daughter wanted a smaller dog, like a Maltese or Havanese, and I saw some breeders charging close to 4 grand for a puppy. On top of this, it seemed like shots, spay/neutering, etc. were still on you, which could be several hundred dollars more. Animal rescues I found to be the biggest hassle of all. We applied to adopt between 10-15 dogs. Out of those, I think only 3 actually replied. In all of those cases, the adoption fee was around $500 in total, and we would have still needed to foot the bill for spaying/neutering, vaccinations, etc. What really turned me off from them, though, was the whole application and interviewing process. The application forms themselves were often more intrusive than any job application I have ever filled out, and that is not an exaggeration. On top of that, they wanted to come to your house and evaluate if your home was suitable for a pe before allowing you to adopt the dog. I even had one that said that the previous owner said that the dog had allergies and that the dog would have to have a certain regimen of allergy medication and that I would have to provide proof of administering the meds after adopting the pet! With the animal shelter, I found the biggest inconvenience to simply be that animals are adopted so quickly that you don't feel like you can take time to think about it. We had 2 cases where we went in, saw a dog, liked it, but wanted to sleep on it, only to find out the next day that the dog had been taken. Despite that, I would say that animal shelters are by far the best option. In my state, all shelter animals are required to have shots, be chipped, and to be spayed/neutered. The process is also about as straightforward as can be. You sign in, spend some time with animals that you are interested in, and then fill out some paperwork, and then take the animal home. In our case, we were able to adopt a neutered Maltese mix with all shots, chipped, and even got a free carrier kennel for $15 on an Easter holiday special. The shelter even had agreements with local vets for a free first checkup, which we took advantage of. It turned out that our new dog also has allergies, but I was really happy being able to talk to a vet directly about it without someone else(rescue) looking over my shoulder. In our case, our new dog is allergic to a lot of dog food. The vet recommended OTC Benadryl or trying to change up his diet. The latter helped a LOT more, to the point that we saw him no longer rolling around on the floor and scratching after eating and almost instantly started seeing a much more active dog. Compared to a breeder, we saved several thousand dollars, and, compared to a rescue, we saved several hundred dollars as well as a ton of hassle. With all of the money we've only needed to make minor adjustments to our medical and grocery budgets, which has meant less time stressing out about money, and more time with the new family pet.

Is anyone else going to the public opening on July 6? Do you think this is worth going to? Will it help convince the power-that-be to actually find a permanent use for the space?

I actually don't mind the Pluto ads. If you put Trek on in the background while working, I think you'll find that they're so repetitive yet non-annoying that you just mentally block them out.

I find the PlutoTV app to also be much more user-friendly and reliable than Paramount Plus. I would rather be able to have everything on demand and pay Paramount, but the Paramount Plus app is so buggy on my Smart TV and on Kodi that I've given up.

The last straw was when I was actually contemplating writing a script to automatically restart Kodi because of how often Paramount Plus dies on Kodi.

I agree with you that it's nice in a way not even having to think about what to watch next. If something really bad comes on, like that pretty racist TNG episode from season 1 or the Voyage lizard episode, it's a lot easier to just switch from the Star Trek to the More Trek channel, or vice versa, and be done with it.
