2.5 years ago there were a lot more games still targeting last gen consoles as their minimum baseline. Newer games that are current gen consoles only tend to fare a lot worse on steam deck.

  • What's going on with the Godot engine?
  • PrinzKasper PrinzKasper 2w ago 100%

My guess is that at best they're going to mirror all the merges happening in the main godot repo with the only difference being the custom branding, but even that they will probably lose interest after a few months and peter out. I highly doubt there's going to be any unique developments or improvements. And even if they do? The main Godot repo could just yoink them right back lol.

  • Changes coming to how Minecraft is being developed:
  • PrinzKasper PrinzKasper 1mo ago 100%

Sounds good overall, but I hope that frequently dropping small updates doesn't discourage them from also working on bigger features. Stuff like the world generation overhaul from the Caves & Cliffs update.

I do also find it confusing that they are bringing a native PS5 version but absolutely no word on an Xbox Series version? This is a Microsoft published game, and they don't have a version for their four year old flagship console lol.

Not that it matters to me, I'm a Java edition player now and forever, but I do still find it strange.

Modding a modding tool so you can mod more mods. Jokes aside this is really cool. I know Divinity OS2 had similar tools, but given how much more popular BG3 is there will likely be more substatial mods made for it.

It's not like I just change things for the sake of change
  • PrinzKasper PrinzKasper 4mo ago 100%

About a year ago I tried switching to Linux and used Linux Mint exclusively for about a month and a half.

I have multiple monitors with different refresh rates, one 144hz and a 60hz monitor. The problem is that the compositor runs at the lower of the two, for both monitors. In theory it should be possible for a full screen app like a game to bypass the compositor completely, but I could never get that to actually work, games running in both exclusive full screen and borderless were kneecapped to 60hz video output because I had the audacity to have a secondary monitor connected. But even if that did work correctly, regular desktop use would still be kneecapped. Admittedly not as important, but still annoying. I ended up having to use a hacky config tweak to force the compositor to run at 144hz, which worked but also caused tearing on my secondary monitor.

On top of that, X11 straight up does not support VRR / G-sync if you have more than one monitor. And HDR? Completely unsupported.

  • PrinzKasper PrinzKasper 4mo ago 100%

I have to go with Chicory: A Colourful Tale. It starts of kind of slow, but the writing and character interactions sucked me in with heavy themes of self doubt and searching for a place in society, which are very well implemented in my opinion.

There are many games that are about overcoming depression as an overall theme, but it's usually represented in a very metaphorical way and in doing so they kind of lose impactfulness, at least for me. Not here, Chicory straight up has depression, and you're trying to help her out.

The game also has pleasant art and music, and it cleverly pokes at you to be creative at various points. It actually got me to buy a cheap drawing tablet and start playing around with art haha.

Overall just a really well made game that resonated with me on a level that no other game has.

The X3D Chips have been a slam dunk win for AMD, so much so that I have no plans to upgrade from my 5800X3D any time soon. That being said, I am interested in seeing just how far they can ride that wave.

[Discussion] Double discussion this month, what games did you buy for your Deck during the Steam Sale, and what are you playing on Deck right now? - July 2024
  • PrinzKasper PrinzKasper 4mo ago 100%

I bought FH4 since they announced it'll be delisted by the end of the year. I've previously played it a lot via gamepass, but despite the fact that it doesn't have Cross-Progression with the Steam version I still bought it on Steam so I could play it on Steam deck. Medium settings run at 60fps!

Other than that my backlog is big enough that I will abstain from the sale. Recently finished The Werecleaner (short and funny free game) and Black Mesa. Now playing CrossCode, FEZ and Nightmare Kart.
