Yeah, a roommate of mine who was a crazy awful bitch but she had EXCELLENT taste in music.

One time she decided to punish us for god knows what slight by playing really absurdly loud music. Kinda backfired because when she finally stopped I texted her asking her to turn it back on.

It's literally not actually. All political ideologies are capable of genocide when taken to extremes, and many have done so. Colonial America, Stalinist Russia, too many absolute monarchies to count...none of those were fascist, but they were genocidal. We associate genocide with fascism because of the Holocaust, but they're two different concepts.

Funny enough, California has a very progressive tax system, and has higher than normal income inequality but a higher base standard of living than the rest of the US. I think having an economy with more opportunities for people inflates everyone's income, including the rich.

But it brings up a question, if everyone were to have a decent standard of living, is it as big a problem that rich people exist? Obviously we're not there yet, but hypothetically in a post scarcity world, it's an interesting thing to think about.

What we need is a unified set of standards for job listings and for resumes. Make it easy to see which workers and which jobs are a bad fit. Just formatting and key words would be huge.

Yeah, kinda showing your own ignorance if you think this doesn't matter. I'm white, but grew up in Black neighborhoods and smoke monthol. It absolutely feels like racist targeting. Ban the cigarettes that almost exclusively black people smoke, but keep the cigarettes and chewing tobacco that white people use? Feels pretty fucking racist dude.

Sounds about right. I went full tilt for about 9 months, because I felt they were paying me enough for it. Recognized signs of burnout, switched to a less stressful role.

Just to be clear, I don't like traditional, old school Republicans. But they're not a threat to democracy itself. Civil wars and fascist takeovers are bad for business.

But the inmates have taken over the asylum at the GOP. MAGA doesn't care about democracy, or money, or anything. They're a cult.

You have all the powers that Putin currently does. Everyone completely loyal to Putin is now loyal to you. Enemies of Putin are enemies of you. Putin no longer exists, and there has been a clean and absolute transfer of power to you. The economic, military, social and political situations are the same as they now are. You are not inhabiting Putin's body, you are just you. You're magically transferred to the Kremlin. The world at large doesn't know your past life, to them you have magically appeared as the new ruler. To everyone who knew you before, you just vanished. Edit: no one knows your past life YET. They'll quickly figure it out. You will not lose any support based on your actions in your past life.

Especially for those of us with no coding background, who can't just build/edit an app. For example, I like using Gadgetbridge to replace my fitness tracker app: https://gadgetbridge.org/ It's not nearly as full-featured as a regular fitness app, but it literally can't connect to the internet so there's no way anyone can get my health info.

Not like "I went to school with one" but have had an actual friendship? I've had a couple of conversations recently where people have confidently said things about the Black community that are ridiculously incorrect. The kind of shit where you can tell they grew up in a very white community and learned about Black history as a college freshman. Disclaimer: I am white, but I grew up in a Black neighborhood. I was one of 3 white kids in my elementary school lol, including my brother.

There's a whole genre of sci-fi that has a major premise as "humanity is the most powerful/dominating/victorious species in the cosmos...and that's not a compliment". I always understood that to be a facet of HFY, but per this sub's description HFY should be "uplifting". Like, a story where aliens try to invade Earth and we kick their asses is definitely HFY. But what if we then enslave the survivors of the alien horde? What if we reverse engineer their tech, go to their homeworld, and nuke their planet? What if we tailor a virus to their genome and purge the galaxy of their entire species, and their little alien babies die screaming in their little alien cribs? Is that HFY?

The human body needs constant exposure to germs to keep its immune system healthy. Washing dishes, doing laundry, and taking showers all damage or destroy the bacteria that's keeping your immune system strong.

A lot of people worldbuild when they daydream and have the bones of a story kicking around in their brain, but have to pay the bills and raise the kids etc so they never flesh it out and write it down. What's your story's premise? Fantasy, sci-fi, alternate history, mystery, western, whatever genre.

    >The Great Filter is the idea that, in the development of life from the earliest stages of abiogenesis to reaching the highest levels of development on the Kardashev scale, there is a barrier to development that makes detectable extraterrestrial life exceedingly rare. The Great Filter is one possible resolution of the Fermi paradox. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Filter >The Fermi paradox is the discrepancy between the lack of conclusive evidence of advanced extraterrestrial life and the apparently high likelihood of its existence. As a 2015 article put it, "If life is so easy, someone from somewhere must have come calling by now." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermi_paradox Personally I think it's photosynthesis. Life itself developed and spread but photosynthesis started an inevitable chain of ever-greater and more-efficient life. I think a random chain of mutations that turns carbon-based proto-life into something that can harvest light energy is wildly unlikely, even after the wildly unlikely event of life beginning in the first place. I have no data to back that up, just a guess.
