number of Nazis actually executed at Nuremberg

..Eleven? Is that fucking it? 73 million dead, 17 million mass murdered, as enabled and enacted by hundreds of thousands of willing Nazi officers - 24 put on trial, and only 11 got the death penalty? THAT'S IT?? big-honk

I was always taught the Nuremberg Trials were a big thing where they really dealt out justice. It should instead be renowned as the most useless pitiful pretense of an event pretending to deal out even the minorest amount of justice. I see there were subsequent trials, but the amount of people convicted is still utterly pitiful.

An event that comes to mind, is during a meeting where Stalin proposed they should execute basically all the Nazi leadership because they, you know, led and fought for literal genocide and fascist world domination. America and the UK effectively objected (the exact details are contested).

The result was that the worst war criminals were relocated per Operation Paperclip, and the rest of the West German leadership were basically the same Nazi officers and bosses who were in charge pre-war (and also later in senior NATO positions). The leadership didn't fundamentally change in any way, the Nazis got rewarded with cushy jobs, it could barely be called denazification at all.

How to deal with broken collision detection on a deterministic physics engine?
  • CarbonScored CarbonScored 3d ago 100%

If I understand this right, you're looking for Continuous Collision Detection

i.e. rather than calculating collision by looking at the intersection of objects in every frame, instead calculate collision by drawing out the path the object will go, and looking for collision along it.

  • I Really Hate Semantic Pedantry
  • CarbonScored CarbonScored 5d ago 100%

I think it gets overused, especially where the meaning is otherwise still very clear or it was just obviously a typo or quick mistake. I think there's room for semantic pedantry when someone is genuinely being ambiguous, though.

I do it though, and at least in my personal life, it really helps me to clear up meanings where I genuinely don't understand what people mean. It's hard to ride the line of "Do you mean x?" or "I assume you mean x" without coming across as condescending, but I really do plead that it has a place. And I can only apologise for times when i am nerd, I don't always do it perfectly, but what will seem to others as me having an annoying focus on minor detail, or being overly prescriptivist, is actually a habit that serves me well and helps me communicate better, so I don't intend to stop.

Being a pedant for the sole purpose of just arguing over nothing, like the indigenous example you provide though, I agree is silly.

It's really fun to see users on here who declare they came from elsewhere in the Lemmyverse, ignored the boogyman narrative, had a cool conversation with our valiant posters, and eventually decided we were so friendly and welcoming that they wanted to stay. I see someone declaring that basically every week now, it's great to see the proof that you can actually have more comrades by means of nice conversations Care-Comrade Those posters warm my heart.

This is just a short, easy-to-read paper I keep in my bookmarks and go back to occasionally. It explores, qualitatively, the various outcomes that contact with alien intelligence might have. I think it's a really cool 25-page exploration of possibilities that are fun to think about. Some choice quotes: >ETI (extraterrestrial intelligence) might attack us not out of selfishness but instead out of a universalist desire to make the galaxy a better place. >perhaps ETI make contact with Earth to welcome us into the Galactic Club but only after we complete a set of required bureaucratic tasks ![hexbear-posadist](https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hexbear.net%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2F5cd2b438-e35c-4f18-a2a8-658116f979e8.gif "emoji hexbear-posadist") >They may be interested in incorporating us into their civilization so they can sell us their products, keep us as pets, or have us mine raw materials for them. >if ETI place intrinsic value on lives, then perhaps they could bring about more lives by destroying us and using our resources more efficiently for other lives My favourite section is the "unintentional harm" outcomes, which suggests the possibility that they just might squish us by accident. >One non-biological physical hazard that we could face from direct contact with ETI is unintentional mechanical harm. For example, ETI might accidentally crush us while attempting an unrelated maneuver. ![i-spil-my-jice](https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Fhexbear.net%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2F1399b8f4-765d-4ecf-ab4a-226392b903bd.png "emoji i-spil-my-jice") Can't for the life of me find where I first heard of this, but I just wanted to share it for being fun and fairly silly yet still officially worked on by NASA.

cross-posted from: https://hexbear.net/post/52. Lemme kick it off with the still top rated post on hexbear.net, probably worth restating for our federation friends too. > edit: this post has gained a lot of traction over the course of the last three months so I believe some clarification is needed > > this title is indeed a land of contrast, and i think the following statement should do a better job at voicing what I really meant with this post: > > people who think they can own one or several human beings and treat them as their property or capital do indeed deserve to die, preferably sooner than later, and not of natural causes; helping accelerate this process by loading a rifle with ammunition, pointing it at a slave owner and pulling the trigger is a good idea and should be done when possible. hopefully this clarified the stuff > > > > The post that announces the death of Henry Alfred Kissinger better overtake this one as the most upvoted post. > > edit:edit:The killing slavers fandom is dying!
