I remember when I was on Reddit I would check it several times a day. But with Lemmy there doesn't seem to be that much content popping up to justify that. I'm finding myself less addicted to the platform genre. How often do you check Lemmy? What do you subscribe to that keeps you coming back?

You’re not going to believe this: I was permanently banned from both these subreddits, r/SFXLibraries and r/AudioPost for “piracy efforts”! *Where* or *how* did I commit “piracy” in any of these reddit posts?! Only adding insult to injury; I got immediately muted from contacting both subreddit admins for 28 days! I didn’t even mention anything pirate-related like keygens or torrents. I just asked for help to locate these sound effect and music libraries to their source websites. Adding more insult to injury, after my 28 day mute expired, they muted me again for ANOTHER 28 days! The same thing happened on r/TooAfraidToAsk when I tried to re-erect the page after Reddit's spam filter removed it after I was shadowbanned. r/TooAfraidToAsk claimed I'm now perma-banned due to breaking "Rule 3". How did I even "soapbox", "troll", "moralise", "sealion", or "spam"? They accepted it the first time and now I get booted for good this time?! It seems just asking this type of question is too dangerous! So therefore, I need to ask somewhere else. But even those other sites aren’t fairing any better! - My Deviantart journal included. How can something as **simple and innocent** as asking where I can acquire this audio file (stock music for Most Shocking Police Videos or Sound Ideas/The Hollywood Edge sound effect) be treated as… a **full-scale felony**?! I thought hard *and* I tried , and low and behold: they all deleted my question or block me because I “attempted illegal shares” or the question doesn’t really fit their forum site. Obviously, when there’s a question, IT NEEDS ANSWERS! What is an animation video without music or sound effects?! I have high doubts that **Alvin Earthworm** ever purchased any sprites or sound effects or music for his **Super Mario Bros Z.** Why don’t YOU give me advice where I can seek this answer, because I am running out of places to try. And so far, no luck on The VG Resource either. Speaking of which, did they totally forget about iOS Jailbreaking, reverse engineering, and The VG Resource? These are ways to acquire things without getting into trouble. I'm just trying to be like every non-profiting animator and make things like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKU2_RfIAc8, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yk_3WQRizug and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFMkkkci-rw. These videos I found utilize Sound Ideas/The Hollywood Edge sounds. This guy and little boy uploaded it with no problem! Yet these mod bozos treated me like a worldwide-wanted criminal! These sound effects are heard and used literally *everywhere* (cartoons, movies, TV, and especially video games). Therefore, no one should bother to care *who’s* using them, should they? Looking for one law breaker who’s using something very commonly heard is like looking for a needle hidden in a haystack. So I’m certain the copyright holder wouldn’t waste their time and money hunting down one individual with the “illegally” acquired item - let alone millions of them on this planet . Alot of people have used them for their “crappy” stop motion films and they never had problems. Next thing you know, they’re gonna invent and mandate a license to “drink rainwater falling from the sky”. I have high doubts that these lego animators ever purchased these sounds. Note: these sound effects *were* free to download - at least back when SoundDogs was in control of distributing these sounds at that time period. Why do you think sites like The Models/Spriters/Sounds Resource exist? To help others acquire games' decompiled assets - such as models, sprites (for things like a HUD or UI), OSTs/BGMs (Background Music or Original Sound Tracks) and, of course - sound effects. We've been putting OSTs and BGMs onto YouTube with almost no problems. So therefore, who should bother to care in this situation? This is no different than turning off the music in the game's options menu and playing with just sound effects enabled. And you can cue that sound effect in the game as much as you want to your heart's content. Speaking of which, did they totally forget about iOS Jailbreaking, reverse engineering, and The VG Resource? These are ways to acquire things without getting into trouble. I'm merely making a homemade movie for entertainment and fun purposes only. I'm not doing monetary things like join Michael Bay and make a blockbuster as eye-peeling as his Transformers franchise.

# Check-In each day with your progress or # Start each day with a list of the most important things you want to accomplish. or # Both ### [Prior Accountability Check-In Post](https://discuss.online/post/3232029) I haven't been consistent with keeping up with my check-ins and even forgot to make a ckeck-in post here for last week so this post is to cover the fortnight we're in the middle of. I really should automate a posting to help myself out.

I'll create a Weekly Wins post on Saturdays I'll create a Accountability Check in post each Monday. Maybe I'll automate both.

I didn't check in last night due to some a evening mess that needed cleaning. What progress did you make yesterday?

What do you think about having a regular State of Discuss.Online update? - Show some graphs of active users. - Assess the activity of communities. Discuss - donations and costs - What's new? - What's planned? - Progress on ongoing things

Small or large, what are you counting as a win this week?

I did a little reading on databases. I did not work on the Summary Functions and Maps exercise on Kaggle today. But I did get extra rest to deal with the vaccine side effects. Ultimate goal is to get a Masters Degree, so I want to make progress most days. Not sure today counts as progress, but I didn't really expect much. Hopefully I feel OK tomorrow. Are you working towards anything?

I just got mine today. Wondering if the Discuss.Online crowd is staying on top of COVID-19 vaccinations.

I made a post on a community on the Lemmy.world instance and I can only see it from my discuss.online account, not a separate lemmy.world account. Is this a federation issue? Not sure why this would happen if we’re federated with lemmy.world. Thanks for feedback!

Defed?

Hey y'all. I'm not a huge fan of defederating other instances but I honestly don't know that hexbear is adding any value to our discussions. So far everything I have seen is trying to be edgy and gatekeeping with manipulative language. They also seem to enjoy stirring things up for entertainment. So I pose the question is it worth it to stay federated to a seemingly bad faith instance for the few people who might understand and enjoy the lulz. I would vote no but I'm open to the discussion.

Hello! Was hoping to make discuss.online my new home instance, but I'm having trouble accessing some communities on other instances: - [!artisans@reddthat.com](https://reddthat.com/c/artisans) - [!mapmaking@lemmy.world](https://lemmy.world/c/mapmaking) - [!rpgcreation@ttrpg.network](https://ttrpg.network/c/rpgcreation) - [!rpgdesign@lemm.ee](https://lemm.ee/c/rpgdesign) They don't show up in communities search, and trying to go to them directly returns a server error page, with an error message given like: >FetchError: invalid json response body at http://lemmy:8536/api/v3/post/list?community_name=rpgcreation%40ttrpg.network&page=1&limit=20&sort=Active&type_=All I can access *other* communities on all of those instances... - [!games@lemmy.world](https://lemmy.world/c/games) - [!abandonedporn@reddthat.com](https://reddthat.com/c/abandonedporn) - [!rpgmemes@ttrpg.network](https://ttrpg.network/c/rpgmemes) - [!whatcouldgowrong@lemm.ee](https://lemm.ee/c/whatcouldgowrong) ... so I know it's not an issue with them being blocked, but it seems like they're not being fully federated either? Anything I can do on my end to further investigate or attempt a workaround?

Hello, I hope this is the good place to make this post. I wanted to access this community from lemmy.today, but it seems that it cannot be found. Is there anything blocking the federation from happening? https://lemmy.today/c/discuss@discuss.online Thank you for your help!

I cannot see comments made by lemmy.world instance when logged in to discuss.online. Not sure if any other instances are affected this way. I also cannot search some communities. I have not figured out a pattern. I wonder if it is intentional. Here is an example: https://discuss.online/post/202378. There are a few comments under the post, but I do not see them.

The fastest growing app will have the worst retention rates. Imagine a world where all users are the same, regardless of social network. Imagine that if 1000 users start using a social app on day 1, that only: * 900 of them will be using it on day 2 * 800 of them on day 7 * 600 of them on day 30 * 500 of them on day 365 Now imagine if network A hasn't grown in 5 years, but has 100MM users. Network B is doubling every 2 days, and is currently at 100MM users. Which will have worse retention? https://hachyderm.io/@mekkaokereke/110720363135775822

It seems that there are at least 30 Million people that want a different experience than me. [Forbes described the Threads service](https://www.forbes.com/sites/siladityaray/2023/07/06/no-hashtags-no-chronological-timeline-and-mobile-only-how-metas-threads-differs-from-twitter/) with the following summary: > The most significant difference between the two platforms is the timeline, as Meta’s app only displays an algorithmic timeline—in a similar vein to Facebook and Instagram—and offers no option for a Twitter-like reverse chronological time showing the most recent posts. > > The algorithm-driven timeline also displays posts made by accounts that the user does not follow—something that Twitter only restricts to its alternate “For You” timeline. > > Threads is a mobile-only experience at the moment and users can only make posts, write comments and follow people on the platform’s mobile app, unlike Twitter, which allows all of this on its website as well. > > Meta’s official blog announcing the launch of Threads also makes no mention of a native desktop or web browser experience, which is currently limited to seeing people’s posts and their profile pages. > > Hashtags—a key element of Twitter’s identity and a feature that has permeated other social platforms including Facebook and Instagram—are not present on Threads, as the platform does not allow users to search for specific content. > >This means that there is no “trending section” on Threads and the only way to discover content on the platform is based on what Meta’s algorithm decides to serve.

>Are there any communities missing from Lemmy that you'd like to have started? Or >Are there communities on federated instances you wish existed here? Please let me know if you said yes to either of these questions! I'd love to get them started here. I can either help you do it, or I can start to build it up. I'm hoping to grow this community, and part of doing that is as simple as asking *you* what you want. Lurkers of Lemmy

Why do you lurk? I used to be a lurker when on Reddit. I'd post here and there but mostly just kept to myself. It was because something as large as Reddit felt like shouting into the void. On Lemmy, the communities are small, and so are the instances. Is it lack of something to say, anxiety, or you're a bot? What's up! I find myself being way more active on Lemmy & Mastodon than on Reddit & Twitter.

A lot of you are new to Lemmy and the fediverse. You might have some questions about it, about me, or about discuss.online and it’s sister site [utter.online](https://utter.online). Ask me anything. I’ll be watching this thread all day today: June 30th, 2023.

Before you may have seen the new dark theme, I've updated the default theme to the new light theme. Did you know in your user preferences, you can change which theme you use? Which do you prefer? Which should be the default for the site? I think the light should be the default for accessibility. Those that want dark can change it. Let me know!
