>Problematic as his views are today, H.P. Lovecraft is still regarded as one of the giants of horror literature, and his stories have been finding their way to the big screen for decades. But equally interesting are the Lovecraft-adjacent works, movies clearly influenced by his vision of an indifferent universe full of monstrous entities, yet not specifically based on anything the man wrote. John Carpenter, for example, has mined this territory with films like The Thing (1982) and In the Mouth of Madness (1995), while Lovecraft Country addressed Lovecraft’s racism within the context of the cosmic horror he made famous. >One of the best films to derive inspiration from Lovecraft’s work is The Lighthouse, directed by Robert Eggers from a script by Eggers and his brother Max, and released on October 18, 2019. The siblings had discussed the idea around the time Robert was seeking funding for his stunning 2016 folk-horror debut, The Witch, with its success allowing them to finally move forward. >The Lighthouse was initially inspired by an unfinished story fragment, “The Light-House,” by that other early titan of horror and mystery, Edgar Allan Poe. Aside from the title and bleak setting, however, The Lighthouse doesn’t really have any connections to Poe’s tale. As the film opens sometime during the 1890s, two lighthouse keepers arrive on a desolate island off the coast of New England for a four-week tour of duty... >... It’s the more mythic and cosmic aspects that are overtly Lovecraftian, along with the constant stream of ichorous fluids, putrefying bodies, barely glimpsed tentacular horrors, panicked sexual tension, and allusions to gods of the sea, where many of Lovecraft’s Elder Gods slumbered. Some of these merge, as when Pattinson’s Winslow (whose real name, it turns out, is also Thomas, adding the loss of identity to the thematic morass) hallucinates himself beating Dafoe’s Thomas Wake, only for the latter to morph into the Greek sea god Proteus. And then there’s the lantern atop the lighthouse, which will likely remind horror veterans of the “unnatural light” of Lovecraft’s “The Colour Out of Space” or the “deadlights” from Stephen King’s It. >There’s a lot going on under the hood of The Lighthouse; in addition to Poe and Lovecraft, Robert Eggers has cited authors like Herman Melville and Sarah Orne Jewett, along with playwrights such as Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter, as instrumental to the film’s flavor and mood. Yet as an original psychological horror in which reality itself is besieged by unseen forces, it remains a Lovecraftian tone poem, an oppressive yet cosmic study of madness, desire, and ancient terror that, minus the author’s more noxious tendencies, could fit easily alongside his best works.

And after spending a couple of hours in its Steam Next Fest demo exploring a vast, creepy forest dotted with gargantuan skeletons, while also being hunted down by packs of Werewolves to intense guitar riffs, I can confirm that The Axis Unseen ticks the Skyrim, heavy metal, and horror boxes with ease. >Skyrim's inspiration is immediately obvious when you're first thrust into this mystical open-world, with a trusty bow in hand and the promise of magical powers to come. These similarities perhaps aren't surprising when you learn that Purkeypile is also an ex-Bethesda developer who has worked on the Fallout series, Starfield, and Skyrim itself. While this can make the game look like an ambitious mod for Skyrim at first glance, it doesn't take long for The Axis Unseen's Next Fest demo to unleash its unique folklore-based cosmic horror on you - to terrifying effect...

>Event Horizon is light years away from being perfect, but there’s no denying its distinct, evocative flavor. The film’s cult status stems from the way it uses CGI and practical effects to build a disturbing outer space atmosphere with gratuitous gore. In many ways, Event Horizon feels like a spiritual successor to Ridley Scott’s Alien. But instead of a single extraterrestrial threat, it introduces an entire gateway to a dimension that mirrors Hell. This brand of cosmic horror was ahead of its time, but its campy "haunted house in space" vibe is celebrated by sci-fi movie fans today. >That’s not to say everyone hated Event Horizon when it first came out. What first comes off as a thriller, Underwater ultimately has all the markers for a classic eldritch nightmare. The claustrophobia serves as an existential dread and Cthulhu himself makes an appearance. Kristen Stewart stars as Norah Price, an underwater engineer working at a mysterious drilling compound. When the compound suffers catastrophic failure from an unseen force, Norah gathers the survivors and embarks on a mission to find escape pods. Underwater slipped under the radar, but for a film that makes several bold twists on classic Lovecraftian staples, it deserves more attention for innovation at the very least...

It is thus a special treat to review this fourth volume of VanderMeer’s erstwhile trilogy in our tenth anniversary issue of Grimdark Magazine. >For the uninitiated, the Southern Reach series is a sci-fi horror centered on a mysterious coastal region known as Area X, where biological evolution has been accelerated in unexpected and terrifying ways, presumably due to extraterrestrial interference. >I’m a sucker for cosmic horror. Whether it’s the tales of H. P. Lovecraft, cinematic adaptations of his stories, or original films like The Endless and Event Horizon, I simply can’t get enough of this stuff. The idea that we’re not nearly as powerful as we like to think is utterly fascinating to me, so when I first got wind of The Veil, I knew I had to check this movie out. It promised to be a great new take on this mind-boggling subgenre, and I couldn’t wait to see what Lovecraftian thrills it had in store. >The Veil was written and directed by Cameron Beyl, and it stars Sean O’Bryan, Rebekah Kennedy, and Will Tranfo. In the film, Douglas is a retired priest who lives alone in rural Pennsylvania. He leads a fairly typical life for someone in his position, but one night, his entire world gets turned upside down. It all starts when a powerful solar storm knocks out his power and cell service, and right when his electricity goes out, the sky begins to emit a strange green light... >... The Veil is a diamond in the indie horror rough. It’s an eerie, intriguing, and heartwarming story of cosmic terror, and it’s brought to life with two excellent lead performances. It’s pretty much everything I wanted it to be, so if you’re on the prowl for something good to watch, I highly recommend that you give this movie a shot.

Here, we’re learning about a series of murders committed in the Inland Empire (located in Southern California) by the serial killer known as Mr. Shiny. Our main characters are Detective Joe Kirby (Peter Zizzo) and Detective Lexi Taylor (Terri Apple), partners who have been investigating the case for almost two decades. >These murders are grisly, ritualistic killings that Ortiz isn’t afraid to show. Instead of blurred images or small glimpses at crime scene photos as seen in typical true crime documentaries, here we see every gory detail. But then he doesn’t just show photos; we also see video footage of Mr. Shiny’s crimes. Ortiz crafts an elaborate puzzle of footage, whether it be interviews, archival news broadcasts, photos, or eyewitness video, to build a world that feels so lived in and real. Everything builds to a wild, cosmic conclusion that I only wish had gone a little further. >Uzumaki, above and beyond anything else, truly looks and feels like Ito’s manga brought to life. There’s something truly magical about this series even existing in the first place. It casts a cursed energy that’s akin to the videotape from The Ring. Ito’s work is hardly a medium that can’t exist in a full color palette and there are plenty of his stories that take advantage of a rich color spectrum. That being said, Uzumaki’s black-and-white aesthetic works here and makes this project, and Kirie and Shuichi’s story, feel all the more otherworldly. It casts the audience under a spell and it feels like the strange punk rock programming that Adult Swim used to pump out during the week hours of the night during the channel’s infancy. It’s been a long time since Adult Swim has had something that taps into this energy. The closest thing in memory is PFFR’s stop-motion fever dream, The Shivering Truth... >... The first episode alone is full of so many disturbing visuals that are deeply horrific and pure nightmare fuel. Uzumaki’s horror is omnipresent from the first frame. However, it’s remarkable how the series’ scares gradually grow more intense until they’re strangling the audience by the episode’s end. Uzumaki is only four episodes, but it feels like this short episode count is for the audience’s own good and that any more would be too intense. The series is a taught tightrope walk of terror that’s a true triumph. The first episode is filled with more harrowing body horror moments than some shows accomplish in their entire run. Not because of the monsters or their dangerous surroundings, but because at some point in the movie, they realize that they have absolutely no power to change anything in the environment that surrounds them. Therefore films where the main characters struggle to fight against something that cannot be challenged, a battle that technically can't be won. In short, movies that don't have a happy ending. I'm going to be covering Cosmic horror-themed films. Movies that I feel do a fantastic job at adapting Lovecraftian themes. Not movies based on the works of HP Lovecraft.
