>Despite rarely gaining accolades and praise from contemporary and mainstream film critics, Lucio Fulci is a name that needs little introduction among horror fans and aficionados of cult European cinema. Known for creating images of excessive violence that earned him the nickname the "godfather of gore," Lucio Fulci spent much of his career pushing the envelope and, in many cases, tearing it completely to shreds. >Among the best-known contributions from the director is his Gates of Hell trilogy, consisting of The Beyond, City of the Living Dead, and The House by the Cemetery. All three took place in the United States and explored some of the horror traditions associated with their accompanying areas. Set in New Orleans, The Beyond embraces the Southern gothic horror tradition, and the City of the Living Dead contains a subtle nod to H.P. Lovecraft, with the film taking place in the town of Dunwich. >The House by the Cemetery, with its exterior shots being filmed in Scituate, Massachusetts, and the film taking place in and around Boston, makes full use of its location to weave a New England horror story influenced by H.P. Lovecraft's writings. The House by the Cemetery, while featuring many of Fulci’s trademarks that fans of his films instantly recognize, such as quick camera zooms, close-ups of eyes, and depictions of unrestrained violence, is a tale of Victorian evil that exists within the landscapes of New England...

5 Years Ago, a Rising Director Made a Wild Cosmic Thriller With an Ending You'll Never See Coming [The Lighthouse]
www.inverse.com

>Problematic as his views are today, H.P. Lovecraft is still regarded as one of the giants of horror literature, and his stories have been finding their way to the big screen for decades. But equally interesting are the Lovecraft-adjacent works, movies clearly influenced by his vision of an indifferent universe full of monstrous entities, yet not specifically based on anything the man wrote. John Carpenter, for example, has mined this territory with films like The Thing (1982) and In the Mouth of Madness (1995), while Lovecraft Country addressed Lovecraft’s racism within the context of the cosmic horror he made famous. >One of the best films to derive inspiration from Lovecraft’s work is The Lighthouse, directed by Robert Eggers from a script by Eggers and his brother Max, and released on October 18, 2019. The siblings had discussed the idea around the time Robert was seeking funding for his stunning 2016 folk-horror debut, The Witch, with its success allowing them to finally move forward. >The Lighthouse was initially inspired by an unfinished story fragment, “The Light-House,” by that other early titan of horror and mystery, Edgar Allan Poe. Aside from the title and bleak setting, however, The Lighthouse doesn’t really have any connections to Poe’s tale. As the film opens sometime during the 1890s, two lighthouse keepers arrive on a desolate island off the coast of New England for a four-week tour of duty... >... It’s the more mythic and cosmic aspects that are overtly Lovecraftian, along with the constant stream of ichorous fluids, putrefying bodies, barely glimpsed tentacular horrors, panicked sexual tension, and allusions to gods of the sea, where many of Lovecraft’s Elder Gods slumbered. Some of these merge, as when Pattinson’s Winslow (whose real name, it turns out, is also Thomas, adding the loss of identity to the thematic morass) hallucinates himself beating Dafoe’s Thomas Wake, only for the latter to morph into the Greek sea god Proteus. And then there’s the lantern atop the lighthouse, which will likely remind horror veterans of the “unnatural light” of Lovecraft’s “The Colour Out of Space” or the “deadlights” from Stephen King’s It. >There’s a lot going on under the hood of The Lighthouse; in addition to Poe and Lovecraft, Robert Eggers has cited authors like Herman Melville and Sarah Orne Jewett, along with playwrights such as Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter, as instrumental to the film’s flavor and mood. Yet as an original psychological horror in which reality itself is besieged by unseen forces, it remains a Lovecraftian tone poem, an oppressive yet cosmic study of madness, desire, and ancient terror that, minus the author’s more noxious tendencies, could fit easily alongside his best works.

Creepy new survival game has you building a settlement on a living Lovecraftian train, and it looks amazing
www.pcgamesn.com

>There’s something so unique about Lovecraft. While classic horror tropes like vampires, werewolves, and psychotic serial killers all feel well within the realms of human understanding, Lovecraft’s twisted gods and grotesque monstrosities feel completely alien – comprehensible, yet incomprehensible. It’s a universe I love to see reimagined in videogames, and RailGods of Hysterra is doing just that. From the ominous shadowy Cthulhu in the key art’s background, to the weird train that sports a glowing orange eye and rows of teeth, I’ve fallen for the survival game’s universe hook, line, and sinker. >RailGods of Hysterra is described as a co-op survival game set in a Lovecraftian hellscape. You are a Dreamer, and you’ve awoken bound to your eerie RailGod – the aforementioned living locomotive. As either a five-man squad or a solo traveler, you’ll venture through nightmarish landscapes, abandoned outposts, and cult hotspots, gathering new gear in order to upgrade your RailGod. >Combat looks a little Diablo-esque, with multiple players slinging spells at a poor, unsuspecting crocodile. You’ll have to take down various terrors to fuel your RailGod (or kidnap them, whatever you prefer), helping it transform into the horrific Eldritch fortress that it’s supposed to be...

Everything is out to get you in The Axis Unseen, and it's terrifyingly tense
www.eurogamer.net

>Skyrim, but heavy metal horror. That's how (mostly) solo developer Nate Purkeypile has been pitching The Axis Unseen. And after spending a couple of hours in its Steam Next Fest demo exploring a vast, creepy forest dotted with gargantuan skeletons, while also being hunted down by packs of Werewolves to intense guitar riffs, I can confirm that The Axis Unseen ticks the Skyrim, heavy metal, and horror boxes with ease. >Skyrim's inspiration is immediately obvious when you're first thrust into this mystical open-world, with a trusty bow in hand and the promise of magical powers to come. These similarities perhaps aren't surprising when you learn that Purkeypile is also an ex-Bethesda developer who has worked on the Fallout series, Starfield, and Skyrim itself. While this can make the game look like an ambitious mod for Skyrim at first glance, it doesn't take long for The Axis Unseen's Next Fest demo to unleash its unique folklore-based cosmic horror on you - to terrifying effect...

Cyclopean Is A New Old School CRPG Inspired By Lovecraft & The Ultima Games
www.timeextension.com

>If you're someone who regularly finds themselves reminiscing fondly about the early days of computer role-playing games, then you might be interested to learn about Cyclopean — a promising new retro RPG from the Islands of Caliph developer Schmidt Workshops that is currently in development for Steam. >The game draws influence from various early role-playing games including Ultima, Questron, and Legacy of the Ancients, and features stunning monochrome graphics and pixellated character designs as well as two perspectives of the game's world that are split between a 2D map display and 3D first-person dungeons. >Much like Schmidt Workshops' previous titles, the title aims to evoke the look and feel of classic role-playing games from the '80s, but this time around, the developer is pairing this presentation with an ample dose of Lovecraftian horror, setting the game in the Great Abyss, a vast underworld that featured across various H.P Lovecraft's short stories...

It's Been 27 Years: Someone Needs To Remake Event Horizon
https://gamerant.com/event-horizon-remake-27-years/

>Event Horizon is light years away from being perfect, but there’s no denying its distinct, evocative flavor. The film’s cult status stems from the way it uses CGI and practical effects to build a disturbing outer space atmosphere with gratuitous gore. In many ways, Event Horizon feels like a spiritual successor to Ridley Scott’s Alien. But instead of a single extraterrestrial threat, it introduces an entire gateway to a dimension that mirrors Hell. This brand of cosmic horror was ahead of its time, but its campy "haunted house in space" vibe is celebrated by sci-fi movie fans today. >That’s not to say everyone hated Event Horizon when it first came out. Even back then, some reviewers like Total Film pointed out its merits and justified its tag of “The Shining in space.” Apart from its obvious influences from Kubrick's horror masterpiece and Alien, the space thriller also took cues from Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris, and in many ways feels like an unofficial prequel to Warhammer 40,000. This speaks volumes about the film’s cultural evolution into a bona fide sci-fi nerd classic...

In Starless Abyss, you play hex-based battleships with a fleet of eldritch space monsters
www.rockpapershotgun.com

>After a hard day's editing articles about three Disco Elysium spiritual successors - each more politically outspoken than the last, in a kind of Sophisticated Pooh collage of escalating Marxism - I like to kick back with a nice chill game about Lovecraftian space monsters. >That game is Konafa Game's Starless Abyss - a roguelite tactical deckbuilder published by Descenders and Yes, Your Grace outfit No More Robots. It puts you in command of a fleet of upgradeable spaceships, who must chase away invading Eldritch aliens hex by hex... and also, hex by hex. This is both hex-based and a game in which you can cast hexes, you see. Oh, don't look at me like that. I had to distil several manifestos into an article half-an-hour ago. I need this. >In Starless Abyss you play a Proxima, the possibly-human agent of a motley crew of scientists and occultists called Counter Horror. There are five Proximas in all, each with different skills and attributes. There are over 160 cards to discover, divided between six faction groupings, and each campaign run spans three acts with several randomly selected bosses. Visually, it's a writhing pixelart buffet of toothy tentacles and flying eyeballs and spacetime rifts, set to menacing chipset. Here's a trailer...

Kristen Stewart's Outrageously Underrated Lovecraftian Horror Movie [Underwater] is Now on Disney+
collider.com

>Many modern Lovecraftian movies like to unveil their cosmic horror slowly. William Eubank’s 2020 Underwater takes this technique to the next level. What first comes off as a thriller, Underwater ultimately has all the markers for a classic eldritch nightmare. The claustrophobia serves as an existential dread and Cthulhu himself makes an appearance. Kristen Stewart stars as Norah Price, an underwater engineer working at a mysterious drilling compound. When the compound suffers catastrophic failure from an unseen force, Norah gathers the survivors and embarks on a mission to find escape pods. Underwater slipped under the radar, but for a film that makes several bold twists on classic Lovecraftian staples, it deserves more attention for innovation at the very least...

REVIEW: Absolution by Jeff VanderMeer
www.grimdarkmagazine.com

>Absolution is the surprise fourth volume of Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach series, which began with Annihilation and continued with Authority and Acceptance. The original trilogy was published in rapid succession ten years ago, all three volumes appearing in 2014, the same year that Adrian Collins founded Grimdark Magazine. It is thus a special treat to review this fourth volume of VanderMeer’s erstwhile trilogy in our tenth anniversary issue of Grimdark Magazine. >For the uninitiated, the Southern Reach series is a sci-fi horror centered on a mysterious coastal region known as Area X, where biological evolution has been accelerated in unexpected and terrifying ways, presumably due to extraterrestrial interference. Annihilation introduces us to an all-female team of scientists investigating Area X known only by their occupation: a biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, and a surveyor. These four women comprise the twelfth expedition into Area X after the successive failures of all the previous missions. The second novel, Authority, turns its attention away from Area X to focus on the Southern Reach, the shady entity responsible for organizing these expeditions into the horrific unknown. The third book, Acceptance, has a broader scope, shifting among several different perspectives and timelines to provide deeper character studies, including that of the mercurial Lowry, sole survivor of the original expedition into Area X. >Jeff VanderMeer makes a welcome return to Area X with Absolution. This fourth volume of the series is divided into three parts, each leaning heavily into the cosmic horror aspects of the story...

The Veil Shows the Life-Altering Power of a Single Moment
www.25yearslatersite.com

>I’m a sucker for cosmic horror. Whether it’s the tales of H. P. Lovecraft, cinematic adaptations of his stories, or original films like The Endless and Event Horizon, I simply can’t get enough of this stuff. The idea that we’re not nearly as powerful as we like to think is utterly fascinating to me, so when I first got wind of The Veil, I knew I had to check this movie out. It promised to be a great new take on this mind-boggling subgenre, and I couldn’t wait to see what Lovecraftian thrills it had in store. >The Veil was written and directed by Cameron Beyl, and it stars Sean O’Bryan, Rebekah Kennedy, and Will Tranfo. In the film, Douglas is a retired priest who lives alone in rural Pennsylvania. He leads a fairly typical life for someone in his position, but one night, his entire world gets turned upside down. It all starts when a powerful solar storm knocks out his power and cell service, and right when his electricity goes out, the sky begins to emit a strange green light... >... The Veil is a diamond in the indie horror rough. It’s an eerie, intriguing, and heartwarming story of cosmic terror, and it’s brought to life with two excellent lead performances. It’s pretty much everything I wanted it to be, so if you’re on the prowl for something good to watch, I highly recommend that you give this movie a shot.

>H.P. Lovecraft's terrifying tales of madness, ancient deities, and cosmic horror have fascinated readers worldwide for over a century. Lovecraft's profound impact on the horror genre is undeniable, as his unique blend of psychological fear and unsettling explorations of identity loss and existential insignificance continues to resonate. However, translating Lovecraft's eerie visions to the big screen has always proven to be a daunting challenge for filmmakers. Many adaptations have struggled to capture the essence of his work, often relying on excessive gore and visual extravagance at the expense of the profoundly unsettling atmosphere and existential terror that defines Lovecraft's writing. On the other hand, Suitable Flesh stands as a thrilling and successful attempt to bring Lovecraft's nightmarish universe to life. This film expertly delves into the fundamental aspects of Lovecraftian horror, encompassing themes of physical and psychological terror, along with a sense of cosmic unease that is chillingly precise...

4 new horror books filled with eldritch terrors and other frights
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/28/books/review/new-horror-books.html

> Powerful. Brutal. Bursting at the seams with cosmic horror, ennui, violence and self-annihilation. There are many ways to describe Laird Barron’s latest collection, NOT A SPECK OF LIGHT: Stories (Bad Hand Books, 370 pp., paperback, $19.99), but superb works just fine. > >A murderer recounts his most memorable kills and how his victims have haunted him in “The Glorification of Custer Poe.” In “Joren Falls,” a retired couple learn to live with the hungry abomination that dwells in their attic. “The Blood in My Mouth” follows a man whose partner will do anything to see her dog again, even if it means delving deep into the supernatural. > > Recurring elements across the 16 tales in this collection — space as a threatening place full of monsters; Alaska as the cold, unforgiving backdrop where death lurks at all times; violence as the answer to most questions — give it a pleasing sense of cohesion. Barron’s work is where eldritch horrors and unflinching brutality collide with poetry. “Not a Speck of Light” proves Barron belongs on the Mount Rushmore of dark speculative fiction. The five books are: * *Not a Speck of Light* by Laird Barron * *The Night Guest* by Hildur Knutsdottir * *Incarnate* by Richard Thomas * *Sinophagia: A Celebration of Chinese Horror*, translated and edited by Xueting C. Ni

>Recently, as we featured when it was revealed, Titan Comics released a first look at the first issue of Minky Woodcock: The Girl Called Cthulhu, which is the third Minky Woodcock series by writer/artist Cynthia von Buhler, following The Girl Who Handcuffed Houdini and The Girl Who Electrified Tesla. Now, Titan Comics is also releasing an animated trailer to spotlight the new series. >The series will follow in the path of von Buhler's previous Minky Woodcock stories, in that the titular heroine will interact with real life historical figures in otherwise outlandish scenarios, and in this series, she crosses paths with H.P. 'Strange Harvest: Occult Murder In The Inland Empire' Is A Pitch-Perfect Found Footage Film
www.dreadcentral.com

>Stuart Ortiz is no stranger to the world of found footage. As part of the Vicious Brothers, he made Grave Encounters 1 and 2, which are pivotal pieces of contemporary found footage in how they both adopt genre tropes and subvert them to create something uniquely terrifying. Now, Ortiz is back with his new pseudo-documentary Strange Harvest: Occult Murder In The Inland Empire which is perhaps the best pseudo-documentary since Lake Mungo in how it builds terror, never holds back, and features two incredibly realistic lead performances that make you question whether or not the events are entirely fictional. >Ortiz frames Strange Harvest like it’s a true crime documentary you would find on Netflix or Hulu—it’s sleek, cinematic, and even features that melodramatic music always used to punch home the emotional beats. Here, we’re learning about a series of murders committed in the Inland Empire (located in Southern California) by the serial killer known as Mr. Shiny. Our main characters are Detective Joe Kirby (Peter Zizzo) and Detective Lexi Taylor (Terri Apple), partners who have been investigating the case for almost two decades. >These murders are grisly, ritualistic killings that Ortiz isn’t afraid to show. Instead of blurred images or small glimpses at crime scene photos as seen in typical true crime documentaries, here we see every gory detail. But then he doesn’t just show photos; we also see video footage of Mr. Shiny’s crimes. Ortiz crafts an elaborate puzzle of footage, whether it be interviews, archival news broadcasts, photos, or eyewitness video, to build a world that feels so lived in and real. Everything builds to a wild, cosmic conclusion that I only wish had gone a little further. To say any more would spoil the experience of watching Strange Harvest and witnessing firsthand its wild twists and turns. But let’s just say it’s a daring take on cosmic horror I’ve been waiting for...

100 of the Best Horror Comics of All Time

[Full Article](https://www.pastemagazine.com/books/horror-comics/best-horror-comics-of-all-time) - The horror genre built itself into the foundation of sequential art just as vigorously as superheroes, romance or science fiction. When psychiatrist Frederic Wertham published the misguided comics-skewering Seduction of the Innocent in 1954, the moral crusade was in response to the glorious groundswell of murder, corpses and grotesquery on the comics rack. Despite the beating the genre took from the ensuing Comics Code Authority, horror has spent the following decades creeping out of the recesses around mainstream publishing, with Dark Horse, Vertigo, Image, Humanoids and various manga lines filling our nightmares with harrowing new atrocities. In honor of Halloween, this list proudly presents our favorite comic book chillers, thrillers, slow burns and monster mashes, guaranteed to terrify and provoke readers with all the gory gifts this niche offers.

‘Uzumaki’ Review - A Suffocating Spiral of Cosmic Body Horror Perfection
bloody-disgusting.com

>Uzumaki, above and beyond anything else, truly looks and feels like Ito’s manga brought to life. There’s something truly magical about this series even existing in the first place. It casts a cursed energy that’s akin to the videotape from The Ring. Ito’s work is hardly a medium that can’t exist in a full color palette and there are plenty of his stories that take advantage of a rich color spectrum. That being said, Uzumaki’s black-and-white aesthetic works here and makes this project, and Kirie and Shuichi’s story, feel all the more otherworldly. It casts the audience under a spell and it feels like the strange punk rock programming that Adult Swim used to pump out during the week hours of the night during the channel’s infancy. It’s been a long time since Adult Swim has had something that taps into this energy. The closest thing in memory is PFFR’s stop-motion fever dream, The Shivering Truth... >... The first episode alone is full of so many disturbing visuals that are deeply horrific and pure nightmare fuel. Uzumaki’s horror is omnipresent from the first frame. However, it’s remarkable how the series’ scares gradually grow more intense until they’re strangling the audience by the episode’s end. Uzumaki is only four episodes, but it feels like this short episode count is for the audience’s own good and that any more would be too intense. The series is a taught tightrope walk of terror that’s a true triumph. The first episode is filled with more harrowing body horror moments than some shows accomplish in their entire run. It’s cosmic horror with a sinister Lovecraftian edge to the finest degree...

8 Cosmic Horror Movies So Terrifying They’ll Twist Your Reality! (X Spooktober)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rV8JJLJlfi4 Now my definition of cosmic horror boils down to movies that must have a terrified protagonist. Not because of the monsters or their dangerous surroundings, but because at some point in the movie, they realize that they have absolutely no power to change anything in the environment that surrounds them. Therefore films where the main characters struggle to fight against something that cannot be challenged, a battle that technically can't be won. In short, movies that don't have a happy ending. I'm going to be covering Cosmic horror-themed films. Movies that I feel do a fantastic job at adapting Lovecraftian themes. Not movies based on the works of HP Lovecraft. List for TL;DW or otherwise known as hemomancer cheat sheet. - Annihilation - John Carpenter's Apocalypse trilogy - Event Horizon - The Last Wave - Possession - The mist - Uzumaki - The Void
