Asklemmy

There's been an influx of content surrounding lemmy here. Some of it is open ended: - "What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?" - "Lemmy, what do you call users of Lemmy?" And these are a-ok! There's also been a lot of questions like - "How do I block a user?" - "How do I join a community on a different instance" These aren't open ended (at least, relatively). They are objective based, and just need a resolution, rather than discussion. These sort of questions are more relevant to [!lemmy_support@lemmy.ml](https://lemmy.ml/c/lemmy_support). I know there's also questions like "What are you guys doing when there’s multiple communities for the same thing across instances?". I'm inclined to let those stay, there is lots of opportunity for discussion. It's a game of discretion from a moderation perspective, but I assume most can easily guess what is cold hard support. At least from me, moderation of support posts has been sporadic at best, despite the long standing rule. I will begin redirecting these questions to [!lemmy_support@lemmy.ml](https://lemmy.ml/c/lemmy_support), however I'm of course willing to listen to the community here if that's not what is wanted, as well as other feedback. edit: support posts will now be removed, not locked

I regularly bake sweet potatoes then add plain yogurt, salted peanuts, feta, nutritional yeast, and drown it in hot sauce. The dish has no name nor should it ever see the light of day. What goblin mode meals do you guys eat?

Utterly stupid little things, its money that is less useful in EVERY situation and expires! Even at the store where you can use it, what do you do with the money that's leftover but too little to spend? Especially at expensive places, you could very well end up with 10-20$ OF YOUR OWN MONEY, that you can't even use! I was given a dunkin giftcard for volunteering at a repair cafe. First of all I'm on a diet but secondly I stuffed it in my wallet so quickly I completely forgot about it. The day I remember and go through the trouble of attending such a wretched establishment I was told it expired after I finished giving my order! After such bother to try to use this cursed thing I refuse to return fruitless from my endeavors so I paid with my own cash. It is now, sulking into my hashbrowns and Boston cream do I realize I am now poorer, fatter and fucking miserable. FUCK gift cards.

Mine is retail work. Yeah I get it. You hate it. There isn't anything that I hadn't heard before about it by now that hasn't already been said. Yup, people suck. But on the same token, I don't really appreciate the level people go to, to dissuade people from getting into retail work. Job is a job and income is income. You'll need both of these things. I've learned that a lot of the time, people just happen to be employed by shitty stores that are managed by power-tripping people or maybe the team they work with are annoyingly incompetent. Yet if you manage to find a store that's worth working in, it's worth it for however long you want to be there for. I chose to work for retail. I don't mind the labor. I don't want a sit-down desk job. And yeah I work for a big company that has questionable values and has destroyed communities. But that's really out of my control and because that I work for said company, does not necessarily mean that I agree with it or side with the corporate standards. If I wanted to, I'd go back to school and find something else to do. And that's what I advise people to do if they're so tired of their retail job. Go back to school, it's really all you can do other than go to trade school to get skills and branch into different careers. Just *removed* about it all day is not going to do a thing. I used to be like that but all it does was just make me hate everything and there were a couple points where I could've gotten fired over it. It's not worth getting fired over something you don't really have an investment in.

The closest thing I can find is **concordance** but it seems like its only really used for Bible stuff or WordClouds - word frequency - eliminating words below frequency cutoffs - concordance - exportable DevonThink sorta does it

Why does the title need to be worded like that? The worst part is that I've only seen them phrased like this with women celebrities.

Hoping this can be a way to make people think more critically about their choice for US President, maybe even bring opposing sides together to fix the problems we ALL face. So if you support Trump try to list 3 things you *dislike* about him and 3 things you *like* about Harris. **Please keep answers serious**. Plenty of other places on Lemmy for you to post snappy putdowns. My answers in a reply.

My 9 year old wants a gaming laptop and my laptop spec knowledge is minimal. He wants to play Fortnite and Minecraft and the like, nothing fancy. Any ideas re good laptops to buy, or good places to look? I'm in the UK and my budget is 300 quid tops, ideally less.

I do get things done. But sometimes I think that I could have started some things early, avoid rush. Also a sort-of negative perfectionism that does the opposite, where I end up delaying the start while thinking about the best time to start and how to avoid possible trouble etc. How do you categorise and adjust accordingly about such stuff? If you are someone who got out of or reduced such behaviour(or helped someone to do that), what were the things that you/they did? How did you/they start out and progress etc. Thanks in advance

Firstly, I'm not against privacy or anything, just ignorant. I do try to stay pretty private despite that. I wanted to know what type of info (Corporations? Governments? Websites??) Typically get from you and how they use it and how that affects me.

So during COVID lockdowns I developed this guilty pleasure of watching YouTubers having miserable times, in the best case vanlife YouTubers. I'm feeling the old itch, can you help me? Do you know any videos of people on travel channels having really, really bad times? I prefer vanlife people, followed by boatlife people. But I'm open to different modes of transport. The more privileged the people and the more miserable their travels, the better. Edit: so I will give you guys something at least, can't find any of the random small stuff I watched years ago atm. The channel vagrant holiday maybe doesn't quite fulfill the criteria, because the guy is doing everything consciously, but it's a fantastic channel, and there definitely is discomfort: https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLphDhroSqrPWi6RbljtGPnl8xr0pmzyb_

I've been cutting out subscriptions and Spotify is the last one I would like to get rid of. I've transitioned to buying and downloading my favourite artists songs so I can own the music I love. The only thing keeping me with Spotify at the moment is the Release Radar playlist it creates for you. Basically I want to know if there is a way to get notified when the artists I follow release new music. I've been looking and so far I haven't found a viable alternative.

Hi everyone, I am planning to buy a Thinkpad T480s with i5 8350u 8 GB 256 GB M.2 SSD to use it with Linux to surf the web, Inkscape and especially to use Blender to create models for 3D printing. Is there anyone who already has it and uses it for Blender? Does it work or are there any problems? I currently have an Asus S56c with Lubuntu and I can do everything, but Blender does not even start because the graphics card of the PC does not allow it. Thanks to everyone in advance.

For the Autobots - My favourite character is Grimlock, it's such a cool thing to have a transforming robot T Rex and that immediately made me like the character from G1 cartoon and the Fall of Cybertron game. For tbe Decepticons - Brawl of the combaticons, I really like tanks and this character was drawn to me with his rugged, battle tested design in the games and films. Oh and the fact he turns into a friggin' tank. Who more than meets the eye for you from each side? Go!

A lot of the things we do on a daily or weekly basis have ways of doing them that can either be private or communal, some of these which we do not think to consider as having that characteristic. For example, bathing in the Roman Empire used to be communal, but then Rome fell and citizens in the splinter countries began taking baths privately. Receiving mail is another example. There are countries which don't have mailboxes and everyone gets their mail at the post office in the PO boxes. It was the United States which pioneered the idea of the modern mail system, which is why we associate it as a private act. There are activities as well which don't have any history as jumping between one or the other that might benefit from it, for example I think towns might benefit if internet was free and freely accessible but only at the local library. What's a non-communal aspect of life you think should be communal?

What are some Lemmy communities which surprise you by their low number of subscribers or which you think more of us should engage with?

About 25 years ago when I was still in college I thought it would be cool to get a motorcycle. I rode it around for about a year with no problems until one day I was riding down this mountain road near where I lived and a deer ran out in front of my bike and I swerved to avoid it, I flew off my bike and into a ditch on the side of the road and was knocked out, my bike fell off the other side of the road and down a sheer cliff face. It was not obvious anyone has ever been there or that there was an accident. I laid there for almost a two days until people started looking for me after missing work. When I came to my legs were messed up, I had broken an ankle, elbow and wrist and couldn't move. I sat there for hours convinced I was going to die. I was pretty upset about it but after a while the anxiety washed away and I just went completely numb. My next memory was waking up in a hospital. Thank god I was wearing a helmet. How about you?

I love goblins and lizardmen. Goblins because deranged little dudes running around is always a blast. Lizardmen because alligator people with melee weapons are the way I wish dinosaurs evolved instead of being birds.

When a book becomes influential enough, someone might try to impersonate it, since publishing doesn't follow any hard rules. For example, I was explaining to someone that, after (surprisingly not before) I got a job at my local library, I took out a communist manifesto, which I later learned was a fake, with writings in there that were not consistent with the official communist manifesto, such as a call for free love. I have also spotted a lot of fake versions of Mark Twain books come in, which has a lot of parts deleted or inserted based on the writer's desire. On the other side of the issue, lately I've been watching a lot of the events unfold in the middle East and have wondered why nobody just ends violence over there for good by making fake Qurans. One or two people have hinted they've tried, with some altered movements centered around it (would you call this government gnosticism), but it's not something you always hear. What's the most severe example of a fake version of a book you've ever seen/encountered?

So, the question seems vague but I will elaborate. I’m a software developer, but I don’t do games; yet I have an urge to try and make something. It just seems so overwhelming, I know I want to make a game where the main character is a cat and you have to complete missions, but where do you even begin. Where does the art come from? How do you refine your idea, if all you know is you want a cat game? How do you choose an engine? Do you just start with the basics and get a cat walking around and see what comes next? If you can’t hash out the idea then so you have a right to even try and make a game? Is it best to follow tutorials to get used to making games? I feel the answer to that is no as before I become a software developer, tutorial hell was a thing and I realised I needed to make things for me to actually learn. Sorry for all the questions, this was just a stream of thought.

And by 'mature manner' I mean, without resorting to name calling, being illogical, unreasonable .etc I've recently tried addressing the immigration issue and as expected, three people just came at me emotionally charged than simply discussing the issue I've had with it. I've seen what I've seen, read what I've read of it and nothing I believe that I have a problem with it is being stemmed from some underlying hatred towards a group of people. My problem with it is the prioritization and lack of regulation in regards to immigration. It is a serious issue. But god forbid you want to talk of it, people resort to "U XENOPHOBIC" or "WE ALL WER IMMIGRANTS AT ONE POINT!". Just completely wiffing on the issue I've already presented with it. What is this subject for you?

TLDR; What are some good party games that encourage getting to know each other and are not centered around drinking? A year ago I had a great party. I split all participants (maybe 16 people) into 4 teams and made a 3 game tournament which was very appreciated. This year I am hoping to replicate the good vibe we had, but I want new games. I am now asking you; What are some good party games? Criterias: * Low or no amount of randomness (to keep things competitive) * Reasonably easy to acquire the materials for * Possible to do as a team * Encourages interaction, either within the team, between teams or both * Should not be centered around drinking

I know and can accept the response that say I should register to X site if I want more activity. I do plan to, least with Reddit, just biding some time before I make yet the 20th disposable e-mail and probably the 100th account before it gets banned again if I cross a glass person. Glass person being someone who's so fragile on opinions and things that they'll scream 'BAN THEM BAN THEM!'. I've been on KBin Social, Lemmy World (least 2 dedicated accounts), KBin Run, Mastodon, Blue Sky .etc And I'd stay for a good while but I also found myself bored immediately. I check for questions to answer, it's the same questions I've seen days and weeks prior. I check around for things that are reported and they'll be hours old and some of them can be years old. I love the idea of the Fediverse, I like some of the features that are implemented. Especially when you do ask questions on here and you're allowed to expand on it. Unlike AskReddit for example, they don't really like that and will remove your post because explaining what your question is about and backing it with an example is just unacceptable to them. I don't know. 43,000+ people sounds a lot on paper, but in practice, it feels like you're dealing with 50 people at any given day.
