The question of difficulty came to mind while playing Metaphor. It was pretty challenging early on when resources were very limited and I was also learning the gameplay systems, but I'm starting to feel powerful now mid-game (while still being challenged a bit). That's where I like to end up, typically. It has a nice ludonarrative feel for the games that typically have you killing god. What do you like?

update see Ashtear's comment: >Seems there was a translation issue, Uematsu is clarifying that he’s still doing work, just scaling it back. The Mana String is quite interesting and gives many new possibilities to the protagonists that make the game more dynamic and fun. On the other hand, the naval combats, although interesting, have left us a little cold. Still, Ys fans are in luck because the spirit of Ys is still intact and in top form, and it's still devilishly fun. ------------- **[Checkpoint Gaming](https://opencritic.com/outlet/563/checkpoint-gaming)** - [Charlie Kelly](https://opencritic.com/critic/6051/charlie-kelly) - [7 / 10](https://checkpointgaming.net/reviews/2024/10/ys-x-nordics-review/) >Ys X: Nordics may not have been the flourishing and vibrant first venture in the series I was after, but I'm also far from turned off by the franchise. Its fast-paced action combat with a plethora of strategies and abilities to employ never ceased to satisfy my brain's often insatiable need for flashy fighting. Backing it is kickass battle music with a heavy emphasis on electric guitar riffs that never get old. Though I wish the story, world and lore found within were more captivating, pretty and memorable, I can't fault how fun and solid the gameplay loop of perusing both the vast seas and involved islands is. There are plenty of secrets, fun gameplay moments and goodies that await. Having considered all that, I'd call Ys X: Nordics a damn fine seaworthy ride indeed. Nothing more. Nothing less. ------------- **[Console Creatures](https://opencritic.com/outlet/798/console-creatures)** - [Bobby Pashalidis](https://opencritic.com/critic/7698/bobby-pashalidis) - [9 / 10](https://www.consolecreatures.com/review-ys-x-nordics/) >Ys X: Nordics showcases many outstanding elements the series excels at — combat, skills, music, and characters are on-point and some of the best we've seen in the nearly 40 years the series has existed. ------------- **[Final Weapon](https://opencritic.com/outlet/727/final-weapon)** - [Raul Ochoa](https://opencritic.com/critic/6667/raul-ochoa) - [4.5 / 5 ](https://finalweapon.net/2024/10/14/ys-x-nordics-review-an-action-packed-coming-of-age-adventure/) >Ys X: Nordics is a crowning achievement for Falcom as one of its most vibrant and compelling action RPGs yet. The setting of the Obelia Gulf invokes a sense of adventure and mystery, while its characters, locations, and lore keeps players engaged. As the young hero Adol and the pirate princess Karja, players experience a combat system that sets the new standard for the franchise as well. ------------- **[GameBlast](https://opencritic.com/outlet/797/gameblast)** - [Farley Santos](https://opencritic.com/critic/7342/farley-santos) - *Portuguese* - [7.5 / 10](https://www.gameblast.com.br/2024/10/ys-x-nordics-analise-review.html) >Ys X: Nordics brings back the classic spirit of the franchise with fast-paced combat and revamped mechanics. The dynamic between Adol and Karja, united by a spell, creates a good starting point for the plot, and the duo combat system offers exciting moments, especially against bosses. The protagonists' customizations and abilities also give plenty of room to explore different combinations. However, the game stumbles in several aspects. The narrative, although promising, gets lost in superficial developments and unmemorable characters. Exploration, although well-intentioned with the addition of naval combat and transversal abilities, suffers from simplified maps and a lack of incentive to revisit areas. Overall, Ys X: Nordics is a fun adventure, but it could have been more memorable if it had made better use of its ideas. ------------- **[GameMAG](https://opencritic.com/outlet/459/gamemag)** - *Russian* - [8 / 10](https://support.savethechildren.org/site/Donation2?df_id=5751&mfc_pref=T&5751.donation=form1) >Ys X: Noridcs is a competent development of a long-running series, and a great opportunity for new players to get to know it better. ------------- **[Gamersky](https://opencritic.com/outlet/597/gamersky)** - [心灵奇兵](https://opencritic.com/critic/8660/-) - *Chinese* - [8 / 10](https://www.gamersky.com/news/202309/1652178.shtml) >As the latest game in the Ys series, Ys X: Nordics doesn't stray far from the familiar formula. It takes a cautious approach, delivering a JRPG experience of consistent quality that lasts around 30-40 hours. If you're looking for a return to a classic RPG adventure with well-rounded combat, systems and gameplay, or if you have a deep affection for the Ys series, then this game will certainly meet your expectations. ------------- **[God is a Geek](https://opencritic.com/outlet/111/god-is-a-geek)** - [Lyle Pendle](https://opencritic.com/critic/10579/lyle-pendle) - [7 / 10](https://www.godisageek.com/reviews/ys-x-nordics-review/) >Ys X: Nordics is a fun enough RPG with enjoyable combat, but dull sailing sections and subpar visuals make it a slightly disappointing sequel. ------------- **[Hardcore Gamer](https://opencritic.com/outlet/23/hardcore-gamer)** - [Chris Shive](https://opencritic.com/critic/1804/chris-shive) - [4 / 5](https://hardcoregamer.com/review-ys-x-nordics/) >Ys X: Nordics brings welcome changes to the template that made its predecessors enjoyable. The ship exploration and naval battles add a new dimension to exploration that wasn't present in previous games. The shift from a three-member party to two does put limit on play variety, but having two constant playable characters brings a different dynamic which works well in the greater context of the story. These changes help differentiate Ys X: Nordics from other entries in the franchise, but it maintains the elements fans have come to expect, such as recruiting people for their base and watching it grow. The story takes interesting turns, especially later in the game, and all is done with a great accompanying soundtrack and frenetic mana-enhanced combat. Returning Ys players will find many elements that are familiar, but enough changes were made to make this new entry stand out from what came before it. ------------- **[Hey Poor Player](https://opencritic.com/outlet/385/hey-poor-player)** - [Kenny McKee](https://opencritic.com/critic/2479/kenny-mckee) - [4.5 / 5](https://www.heypoorplayer.com/2024/10/14/ys-x-nordics-review-ps5/) >As far as Ys chronology goes, Adol’s latest adventure is nothing if not a big step backward. If you ask me, however, this game is a major step forward. Offering an incredibly compelling story, intuitive new mechanics, and a refreshing and unique take on the Ys formula without compromising its identity, Ys X: Nordics is a literal boatload of fun that series fans and newcomers alike. I’d say that good things are on the horizon for Adol from here on out, but, well, we already know that’s true. ------------- **[Hobby Consolas](https://opencritic.com/outlet/499/hobby-consolas)** - [Álvaro Alonso](https://opencritic.com/critic/3755/-lvaro-alonso) - *Spanish* - [80 / 100](https://www.hobbyconsolas.com/reviews/analisis-ys-x-nordics-ps4-ps5-nintendo-switch-pc-1411342) >Hard-hitting action, naval battles, a wide variety of mechanics and systems... It has its problems (some very obvious), but once you get on the boat of Ys X: Nordics, you won't want to jump overboard. ------------- **[IGN Korea](https://opencritic.com/outlet/809/ign-korea)** - [Seongho Moon](https://opencritic.com/critic/8205/seongho-moon) - *Korean* - [8 / 10](https://kr.ign.com/ys-x-nordics/12923/review/iseu-x-nodigseu-ribyu) >One of the developer interviews mentioned something about implementing a Souls-like element to the game, which was a bit of a concern. Once the game was released, it kept the classic taste of Ys, all while adding creative cinematics thus if you’re once a fan, this game won’t disappoint. Classic ARPG masterpiece as Ys would be, we recommend everyone to give it a try. ------------- **[INVEN](https://opencritic.com/outlet/805/inven)** - [Youngseok Yang](https://opencritic.com/critic/8142/youngseok-yang) - *Korean* - [8.3 / 10](https://www.inven.co.kr/webzine/news/?news=289167) >Ys X successfully expands and evolves Falcom's action style. A clean, flowing story that befits the adventures of the young Adol is presented, accompanied by excellent BGM. Moreover, offering plenty of additional enjoyment through New Game+ was also delightful. The challenging content is also quite engaging, giving a glimpse of Falcom's efforts in preparing for a new era. ------------- **[Nintendo Life](https://opencritic.com/outlet/136/nintendo-life)** - [Mitch Vogel](https://opencritic.com/critic/924/mitch-vogel) - [8 / 10](https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/nintendo-switch/ys-x-nordics) >Ys X stands as another great entry in this long-running action series, bringing in some cool ideas of its own without straying too far from what made its predecessors so beloved. Enjoyable combat, an excellent soundtrack, and an engaging world to explore all make this one an easy recommendation, even if it can stumble a bit with its performance and doesn't totally stick the landing with all its new ideas. We'd highly recommend Ys X if you're at all a fan of the past entries or are looking for another solid action RPG to add to your collection. ------------- **[NookGaming](https://opencritic.com/outlet/768/nookgaming)** - [Isaiah Parker](https://opencritic.com/critic/8730/isaiah-parker) - [9 / 10](https://www.nookgaming.com/ys-x-nordics-review/) >I’m thrilled to report that Ys X: Nordics isn’t just good, but in many ways it represents Ys at its best. I have some foibles with it, such as an occasionally inconsistent presentation and a comparative lack of memorable environments. However, it’s a mostly successful modernization and refreshment in a series that was in need of exactly that. Coupling this with improvements to cutscenes elevating an already great story and some of the best boss fights in the series, and you have a game that won’t be leaving my mind any time soon. I’m always excited for what’s coming next with Ys, but as I reflect on this title, I’m downright impatient as I think of the ways they can push its changes even further. Our 10th is always a big deal, and it’s clear that Ys understood that. ------------- **[PSX Brasil](https://opencritic.com/outlet/514/psx-brasil)** - *Portuguese* - [90 / 100](https://psxbrasil.com.br/analise/ys-x-nordics-review/) >Quote not yet available ------------- **[Saudi Gamer](https://opencritic.com/outlet/455/saudi-gamer)** - *Arabic* - [9 / 10](https://www.saudigamer.com/review/ys-x-nordics/) >Just when I finally got burned out of the franchise after Ys IX, Ys X took all the necessary steps to elevate the franchise to higher heights and make one of the best games in the long running franchise by providing the most action packed RPG in Falcom's history despite the obvious budget choices. ------------- **[Spaziogames](https://opencritic.com/outlet/502/spaziogames)** - [Gianluca Arena](https://opencritic.com/critic/3759/gianluca-arena) - *Italian* - [8 / 10](https://www.spaziogames.it/articoli/ys-x-nordics-recensione) >Ys X Nordics is an intuitive and refreshing action JRPG (more action than RPG, to tell the truth) that captures the spirit of the old episodes of the franchise and gives the player a lot of room to explore, loot and fight across the islands of the Obelia Gulf. Not the prettiest PS5 title to date, but certainly a funny and intuitive one. ------------- **[The Outerhaven Productions](https://opencritic.com/outlet/335/the-outerhaven-productions)** - [Scott Adams](https://opencritic.com/critic/8755/scott-adams) - [4 / 5 ](https://www.theouterhaven.net/2024/10/ys-x-nordics-ps5-review/) >Ys X: Nordics showcases the impressive capabilities of the new engine developed by Nihon Falcom. Adol controls exceptionally well, and Karja adds depth to the roster of characters he encounters. Although the game starts off slowly, once you acquire all the necessary tools, it plays like a dream. ------------- **[TheSixthAxis](https://opencritic.com/outlet/68/thesixthaxis)** - [Miguel Moran](https://opencritic.com/critic/321/miguel-moran) - [8 / 10](https://www.thesixthaxis.com/2024/10/14/ys-x-nordics-review/) >Ys X: Nordics maintains a lot of the qualities that this series has come to be known for. Some of those qualities aren't necessarily a positive, like the familiarly linear dungeon encounters and the less-than-impressive visuals of the game, but a lot of it works great. Combat is the best it's ever been, naval gameplay is a fresh and welcome addition, and Ys X: Nordics introduces refreshing character moments with Adol and Karja that I'm desperate to see more of in the next entry. ------------- **[VGChartz](https://opencritic.com/outlet/377/vgchartz)** - [Thomas Froehlicher](https://opencritic.com/critic/4869/thomas-froehlicher) - [7 / 10](https://www.vgchartz.com/article/462434/ys-x-nordics-ps5/) >I have deeply conflicting feelings towards Ys X: Nordics, to such an extent that it turns out to be difficult to score. The part of me that really enjoyed the battle system and sense of exploration, which are both better than ever before in a Falcom release, would opt for a high mark; the part of me that's disappointed with the characters, narrative, and visuals would score it lower. ------------- **[Video Chums](https://opencritic.com/outlet/624/video-chums)** - [A.J. Maciejewski](https://opencritic.com/critic/5170/a-j-maciejewski) - [8.5 / 10](https://videochums.com/review/ys-x-nordics) >I had an excellent time with Ys X: Nordics and it's outstanding that after all these years, Adol's adventures are still taking him to such refreshingly different worlds that are home to distinctly memorable characters. It makes me wonder: where will he end up next? ⚓ ------------- **[Wccftech](https://opencritic.com/outlet/304/wccftech)** - [Francesco De Meo](https://opencritic.com/critic/1717/francesco-de-meo) - [9.3 / 10](https://wccftech.com/review/ys-x-nordics-one-more-memorable-adventure/) >Ys X Nordics stands as one of the best entries in the series, second only to the excellent YS VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. With a cast of charming characters, an engaging story, and fast-paced action gameplay powered by some interesting mechanics that force players to balance offense and defense, the franchise by Falcom has taken a decisive step forward, delivering a highly polished and satisfying experience. ------------- **[oprainfall](https://opencritic.com/outlet/775/oprainfall)** - [Patrick Aguda](https://opencritic.com/critic/9818/patrick-aguda) - [4 / 5 ](https://operationrainfall.com/2024/10/14/review-ys-x-nordics/) >Ys X: Nordics is a very fun action game with loveable characters and a soundtrack that’s sure to have one or two tracks that’ll stick in your mind. The Cross Action System allows for players to enact beautiful destruction and is sure to be a hit with action fans. It has a story that does enough to capture your attention and keep it through the duration of the game, and is a perfect starting point for those new to the Ys series. The naval gameplay does need some polish, but Falcom gave an excellent first attempt. While the game was hampered by some technical and visual issues, this should not deter you from playing this game. Longtime fans of the Ys series, as well as newcomers, will find a lot to enjoy in this game. I certainly had a lot of fun playing through it. -------------

This is the result of 20 years of incredible game craft that has taken shape in the best and most refined version of the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei formula that we've ever received. Probably the best we'll ever get. This is their magnum opus. With immensely satisfying and tactile turn-based combat, and a memorable cast of characters including the alluring and ever-intimidating villain Count Louis, you'll be taken by the world and story to explore within Euchronia. The flexibility provided by the Archetype system encourages the creation of varied strategies, while the progression structured in days adds a layer of planning that enriches the journey. With so many options for activities, from side quests to moments of socializing, it is difficult to have two days the same. However, there are some limitations, such as the repetition of activities and the lack of creativity in some optional dungeons, making the experience tiring at times. In addition, the inconsistent graphic quality and the drop in performance are points that weaken the immersion. In the end, with an extensive campaign and a competent localization, Metaphor: ReFantazio offers a robust and memorable RPG. The title does not revolutionize the studio's formula, but it is still an immersive and engaging experience. ------------- **[GamePro](https://opencritic.com/outlet/488/gamepro)** - [Jonas Herrmann](https://opencritic.com/critic/9464/jonas-herrmann) - *German* - [89 / 100](https://www.gamepro.de/artikel/metaphor-refantazio-im-test,3420658.html) >An excellent role-playing game with fantastic stories and a large scope, but which technically has room for improvement. ------------- **[GameSpot](https://opencritic.com/outlet/32/gamespot)** - [Jess Cogswell](https://opencritic.com/critic/10365/jess-cogswell) - [10 / 10](https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/metaphor-refantazio-review-everybody-wants-to-rule-the-world/1900-6418297/) >Metaphor: ReFantazio combines Atlus' skill in crafting emotionally charged RPGs with brilliant plot twists, a keen sense of adventure, and fantastical idealism to create one of its greatest games yet. ------------- **[Gamer Guides](https://opencritic.com/outlet/733/gamer-guides)** - [Ben Chard](https://opencritic.com/critic/5325/ben-chard) - [97 / 100](https://www.gamerguides.com/metaphor-refantazio/review) >At the end of its massive runtime, Metaphor: ReFantazio never suffers from pacing issues and tells a captivating story that stirs your imagination. In pursuing a new property, complete with a fantasy setting, Atlus has allowed its creativity to blossom, resulting in a brilliantly rich experience - both in terms of narrative and audiovisual design. Atlus and Studio Zero have taken the best bits of the Persona series and somehow made them work within a medieval fantasy setting. But it’s no mere Persona 'holiday special'. The new IP enhances and evolves the formula, becoming a shining example of how to do JRPGs right. The combat is challenging, featuring the press turn battle with a new risk-reward system adding depth to the classic turn-based formula. While the game shares some similarities with the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series, such as social stats and character bonds, it carves its own path with a captivating narrative and stunning world. Swords and sorcery Persona is a marvellously executed pitch. ------------- **[XboxEra](https://opencritic.com/outlet/758/xboxera)** - [Genghis Husameddin](https://opencritic.com/critic/7705/genghis-husameddin) - [9.5 / 10](https://xboxera.com/2024/10/07/metaphor-refantazio-review/) >Metaphor’s world design is almost dreamlike, down to the very storybook of irony that Will carries around with him all the time. The cast bonds together incredibly well and I love how everyone has a part to play in this fantasy land of pixies, a race for the throne, dog and box-headed races, and the like. The artwork is gorgeous, the music is splendid. Mixed in is a simple yet fun combat system, complete with unique overworld encounters in the dungeons and out about in towns. I’ve no metaphors for this—Metaphor: ReFantazio is a fantastic RPG for all. ∎ -------------

However, it has some good ideas, fun combat, and good music working for it. ------------- **[Final Weapon](https://opencritic.com/outlet/727/final-weapon)** - [Raul Ochoa](https://opencritic.com/critic/6667/raul-ochoa) - [3.5 / 5 ](https://finalweapon.net/2024/09/20/reynatis-review-a-satisfying-fast-paced-rpg-that-stands-out/) >REYNATIS is a great action RPG that interprets the themes of a "fantasy based in reality" in an intriguing setting: Shibuya, with a bustling underground of wizards. From the perspective of protagonists Marin and Sari, players may unleash their magic with unique Wizart abilities and explore another world that runs in parallel with their own. Despite some of the game's limitations and flawed execution in various areas, it delivers a compelling story without overstaying its welcome. ------------- **[GamingTrend](https://opencritic.com/outlet/102/gamingtrend)** - [Henry Viola](https://opencritic.com/critic/9816/henry-viola) - [65 / 100](https://gamingtrend.com/feature/reviews/reynatis-review-throwback-to-the-ps2-era/) >Reynatis is close to a master at one trade, with its unique and refreshing combat system. But there's too many other pieces that drag the overall presentation down, especially with its outdated graphics, poor Switch performance, awkward camera angles, and high price tag. However, even through all its minor to glaring flaws, and believe me there are many, it's an adventure I find myself looking fondly back on the things it does well. ------------- **[IGN Italy](https://opencritic.com/outlet/477/ign-italy)** - [Majkol Robuschi](https://opencritic.com/critic/7946/majkol-robuschi) - *Italian* - [5.5 / 10](https://it.ign.com/reynatis/213354/review/reynatis-recensione) >Quote not yet available ------------- **[Niche Gamer](https://opencritic.com/outlet/298/niche-gamer)** - Fingal Belmont - [7 / 10](https://nichegamer.com/reviews/reynatis-review/) >Quote not yet available ------------- **[Nintendo Life](https://opencritic.com/outlet/136/nintendo-life)** - [Ethan Zack](https://opencritic.com/critic/10105/ethan-zack) - [5 / 10](https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/nintendo-switch/reynatis) >It would be one thing if Reynatis was a decent enough action RPG to turn your brain off to and enjoy some simplistic, button-mashy battles with. The problem is that the creators behind this title so obviously wanted it to be more than that, but it doesn't have the writing quality, the technical spectacle, or the mechanical depth to make it happen. Just like its co-lead Marin, Reynatis' single-minded ambition to reach greater heights unveils its greatest weaknesses - a sense of aimlessness and a general apathy toward its own fantastical world. If you believe you can still find some enjoyment in Reynatis despite its failings, it might be worth a shot. Unfortunately, the performance deficiencies of this Switch release make it a game that's best played on just about any other console you have available. With plenty of other great action RPGs out on the market, you have to wonder if it's worth the trouble. ------------- **[NookGaming](https://opencritic.com/outlet/768/nookgaming)** - [Thomas Knight](https://opencritic.com/critic/7286/thomas-knight) - [7 / 10](https://www.nookgaming.com/reynatis-review/) >Reynatis is a rather curious experience. Its story is enjoyable, but it has its issues. The gameplay has some great ideas but it sometimes fails to realize them properly. Luckily the combat is frequent and fun. > >While it's certainly not perfect, I did enjoy playing through Reynatis and I believe others will too. I just wonder about the reasons behind some of the game design decisions made. ------------- **[Push Square](https://opencritic.com/outlet/25/push-square)** - [Jenny Jones](https://opencritic.com/critic/3679/jenny-jones) - [5 / 10](https://www.pushsquare.com/reviews/ps5/reynatis) >The story and world-building are definitely the most interesting things about Reynatis but it’s a shame everything else feels so half-baked and repetitive. It’s hard to get invested in the characters when the dull combat makes you want to get through the adventure as quickly as possible. ------------- **[The Beta Network](https://opencritic.com/outlet/844/the-beta-network)** - [Anthony Culinas](https://opencritic.com/critic/8928/anthony-culinas) - [5 / 10](https://thebetanetwork.net/articles/reynatis-review/) >Even with the help of three Square Enix vets, Reynatis has regrettably fallen short. Its dated PS2-like graphics, copy-paste environments, blatantly reused boss fights and annoying mechanics inevitably damper this 12-hour action RPG. While Shibuya looks lovely, the combat is flash and the narrative about wizards overcoming oppression is intriguing, the gameplay, story and certain characters could’ve been fleshed out further. The drama does have its moments and the Japanese voice-acting is high quality, it’s just a shame that the experience leaves much to be desired. ------------- **[The Games Machine](https://opencritic.com/outlet/497/the-games-machine)** - Emanuele Feronato - *Italian* - [7.5 / 10](https://www.thegamesmachine.it/reynatis/reynatis-recensione/) >Reynatis offers a compelling story and some nail-biting combat with a dual system of defense and offense that engages properly, especially in boss fights with huge monsters. Unfortunately, exploring Tokyo and the parallel world Another is not as engaging, as apart from rare situations it proves to be little more than a walking simulator. Technically it is not excellent, with models and textures reminiscent of what we saw on PS3, however, at least there is no slowdown or frame loss. If you are looking for a storyline full of charismatic characters, this might be your game. ------------- **[The Outerhaven Productions](https://opencritic.com/outlet/335/the-outerhaven-productions)** - [Scott Adams](https://opencritic.com/critic/8755/scott-adams) - [4 / 5 ](https://www.theouterhaven.net/2024/09/reynatis-review-pc-fun-action-with-a-challenge/) >Reynatis is a very fun action RPG that ticks a lot of boxes for me with its challenge and personality. The character models in gameplay do lack polish but the designs are gorgeous. ------------- **[TheSixthAxis](https://opencritic.com/outlet/68/thesixthaxis)** - [Miguel Moran](https://opencritic.com/critic/321/miguel-moran) - [6 / 10](https://www.thesixthaxis.com/2024/09/20/reynatis-review/) >Reynatis is a game full of heart that reminds me of the golden age of PS2 RPG adventures, for better and for worse. It's full of interesting ideas, but is lacking consistent execution. If you can see past that, I do think that the charm of the game – the strong character writing, the living city of Shibuya, and angsty JRPG vibe of it all – will really resonate. -------------

The official TGS livestream starts on the 26th. For our purposes, the Koei Tecmo, Level-5, Sega/Atlus, and Square Enix programs will likely be of most interest there. Gematsu [has a livestream schedule if you're *really* keen](https://www.gematsu.com/2024/09/tgs-2024-official-live-stream-program-schedule-announced). Konami has also promised to show more of the Suikoden remasters, and Falcom will be showing the new Trails. I'm sure there's more I'm missing, too. Is there anything you're looking forward to seeing more of? Any announcements you'd like to see? Personally, I'm going to be here with my clown makeup hoping they finally announce the long-rumored Final Fantasy Tactics remaster.

I'd say Final Fantasy is probably the most well-known JRPG series out there. With over 16 mainline games and countless spin-offs, it's got a huge amount of games under its belt, and has had a big influence on the JRPG genre. The first Final Fantasy game was created by Hironobu Sakaguchi in 1987. In the 36 years since the first game was released, the series has undergone numerous changes. While the games up to Final Fantasy X were all turn-based, sometimes they were played in real time. Subsequent games introduced different experimental battle systems and were MMORPGs or action games. Many fans believe the series reached its peak with the older games between Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy X. On the other hand, the more recent Final Fantasy games, including the Final Fantasy VII remake series, Final Fantasy XVI and every expansion of Final Fantasy XIV, have been well-received. **So what you opionion about the Final Fantasy series, what the best game and what is you opinion about the modern games.** ___ If you want to share your opinion on other JRPG series look at these posts: [dragon quest](https://lemmy.zip/post/16278850)

However, the side quests and voice acting may turn some players off. ------------- **[Checkpoint Gaming](https://opencritic.com/outlet/563/checkpoint-gaming)** - [Pedro Cooray](https://opencritic.com/critic/6052/pedro-cooray) - [8.5 / 10](https://checkpointgaming.net/reviews/2024/08/visions-of-mana-review-a-glow-up-done-right/) >I hope Visions of Mana signals a new, brighter direction for the series. This is more than a classic series receiving a jaw-dropping glow-up. This is a game that gives you a classic JRPG experience while being a modern blockbuster through and through. It's one of the best-looking games this generation and gives you dozens of unlockable options to customise your party your way. The story is deep and dark (for a PG title) and explores familiar themes in a new and engaging way. Visions of Mana confidently asserts its own spot among other long-running modern JRPGs, and I can't help but agree. It's proof that despite its age, this series still has a lot of potential left. ------------- **[ComingSoon.net](https://opencritic.com/outlet/845/comingsoon-net)** - [Tyler Treese](https://opencritic.com/critic/65/tyler-treese) - [8.5 / 10](https://www.comingsoon.net/games/reviews/1837901-visions-of-mana-review-legendary-jrpg-series-finally-returns) >It's not hard to imagine that its story about tradition and sacrifice came from the development team grappling with the pressure of making another Mana game after many years without a new entry, but the end result is a proper continuation of its legacy. ------------- **[Console Creatures](https://opencritic.com/outlet/798/console-creatures)** - [Bobby Pashalidis](https://opencritic.com/critic/7698/bobby-pashalidis) - [Recommended](https://www.consolecreatures.com/review-visions-of-mana/) >Visions of Mana is the first new Mana game in nearly two decades, bringing the series into a new generation. While some overgrown roots need a trim in the future—the various improvements to the combat, the level design, and the world are better than ever. ------------- **[Digitec Magazine](https://opencritic.com/outlet/887/digitec-magazine)** - [Kevin Hofer](https://opencritic.com/critic/10263/kevin-hofer) - *German* - [3 / 5 ](https://www.digitec.ch/de/page/34433) >Visions of Mana plays and looks wonderfully – except for it's stiff character animations. The story is exciting, the battle system offers plenty of variety and the world invites you to explore. Unfortunately, it takes a long time to get there. The story and gameplay suffer from inconsistent pacing. By the time I'm let off the leash, more than half the story is over. > >For fans of the “Mana” series and Japanese role-playing games in general, “Visions of Mana” is a must-play despite its weaknesses. I still enjoyed my 25 hours or so in the world around the Mana tree. I'm used to Japanese role-playing games always taking a little longer. If you can live with that, I can recommend the game to you. ------------- **[Evilgamerz](https://opencritic.com/outlet/878/evilgamerz)** - *Dutch* - [8.5 / 10](https://evilgamerz.com/visions-of-mana-2/) >This may sound a bit strange, but Visions of Mana is a game that you shouldn't expect too much from. The game doesn't do anything new at all. Just like your favorite meal or that one music album that you can't get enough of, this can be an advantage. Visions of Mana takes that old familiar and gives it just enough modern polish to not make it feel too dated. Just like Dragon Quest XI. If this is the future of the series, then I'm at least hopeful for the next installment, because one thing is for sure, it was simply a joy to explore the world in this game. ------------- **[GAMES.CH](https://opencritic.com/outlet/762/games-ch)** - [Sven Raabe](https://opencritic.com/critic/6038/sven-raabe) - *German* - [77%](https://www.games.ch/visions-of-mana/test/review-lhgQ/) >Visions of Mana scores above all with its charming look and loveable characters. The new elemental powers are also quite impressive. Although various facets prevent the action RPG from unleashing its full potential, the return of the legendary game series is a success overall. ------------- **[Game Rant](https://opencritic.com/outlet/60/game-rant)** - [Nick Rodriguez](https://opencritic.com/critic/9277/nick-rodriguez) - [3.5 / 5 ](https://gamerant.com/visions-of-mana-review/) >The Mana series is back with Visions of Mana, a steady, fun, and slightly by-the-numbers entry in the style of the Trials of Mana remake. ------------- **[GamePro](https://opencritic.com/outlet/488/gamepro)** - [Cassie Mammone](https://opencritic.com/critic/10425/cassie-mammone) - *German* - [73 / 100](https://www.gamepro.de/artikel/visions-of-mana-im-test,3418589.html) >Unfortunately, the beautiful graphics and the successful gameplay of Visions of Mana don't completely distract from the boring story. ------------- **[GamingTrend](https://opencritic.com/outlet/102/gamingtrend)** - [Katelyn Lawlor](https://opencritic.com/critic/10523/katelyn-lawlor) - [65 / 100](https://gamingtrend.com/feature/reviews/visions-of-mana-review-yup-its-a-game/) >Visions of Mana is a rollercoaster of emotions. The team under Square Enix has made a beautiful game with a solid mechanical foundation. But the balance of the game has been somewhat out of whack. What's here is not bad, just unpolished and a bit lacking. Visions of Mana is worth your time if the issues mentioned with combat and story won't be an issue for you. Maybe try it on a harder setting. At the very least, I recommend trying the free demo on every platform as that will give you a feel for how the game controls and feels. Visions of Mana is solid but doesn't quite reach the heights it aimed for. ------------- **[God is a Geek](https://opencritic.com/outlet/111/god-is-a-geek)** - [Chris Hyde](https://opencritic.com/critic/42/chris-hyde) - [8 / 10](https://www.godisageek.com/reviews/visions-of-mana-review/) >Visions of Mana is an enjoyable adventure that doesn't push the boundaries but serves as a solid series entry for fans and newcomers alike. ------------- **[Hardcore Gamer](https://opencritic.com/outlet/23/hardcore-gamer)** - [Michéal Murphy](https://opencritic.com/critic/589/mich-al-murphy) - [4 / 5](https://www.hardcoregamer.com/review-visions-of-mana/) >After eighteen years, the Mana series' new entry, Visions of Mana, proves that the franchise hasn't gone anywhere. ------------- **[Hobby Consolas](https://opencritic.com/outlet/499/hobby-consolas)** - [Alberto Lloret](https://opencritic.com/critic/3763/alberto-lloret) - *Spanish* - [87 / 100](https://www.hobbyconsolas.com/reviews/analisis-visions-mana-ps5-ps4-pc-xbox-series-xs-1401856) >Visions of Mana is not only one of the most beautiful action RPGs, it is also a very fun one, with a great combat system and a lot of content, although sometimes it seems that Square Enix has wanted to play it safe without betting on new ideas and concepts, although the move has worked out well. ------------- **[IGN](https://opencritic.com/outlet/56/ign)** - [Nicholas Ransbottom](https://opencritic.com/critic/2130/nicholas-ransbottom) - [8 / 10](https://www.ign.com/articles/visions-of-mana-review) >Exciting combat, a deeply rewarding class system, and likable characters make Visions of Mana a great comeback for this classic RPG series. ------------- **[IGN Italy](https://opencritic.com/outlet/477/ign-italy)** - [Alessandra Borgonovo](https://opencritic.com/critic/3960/alessandra-borgonovo) - *Italian* - [8 / 10](https://it.ign.com/visions-of-mana/212837/review/visions-of-mana-la-recensione) >A commendable comeback for the series, capable of offering a beautiful, bittersweet story and captivating gameplay in its liveliness. ------------- **[INVEN](https://opencritic.com/outlet/805/inven)** - [Dongyong Seo](https://opencritic.com/critic/10370/dongyong-seo) - *Korean* - [7.3 / 10](https://www.inven.co.kr/webzine/news/?news=298722) >While Visions of Mana presents a fantastical world brought to life with vibrant colors, the story's lack of depth makes it difficult to fully immerse oneself in the game, and the slow combat tempo and repetitive sequences until the mid-game are drawbacks. Despite these issues, the game is held together by its charming characters that keep you engaged until the end. ------------- **[Kakuchopurei](https://opencritic.com/outlet/788/kakuchopurei)** - [Jonathan Leo](https://opencritic.com/critic/7505/jonathan-leo) - [80 / 100](https://www.kakuchopurei.com/2024/08/visions-of-mana-review-kkp/) >Visions of Mana's earnestness and positives outweigh its negatives by a sizeable amount. At the very least, old-school 90s RPG fans should be glad that Square Enix did not forget about this classic series, now with a few more bells and whistles to make it quite a ride. ------------- **[Noisy Pixel](https://opencritic.com/outlet/711/noisy-pixel)** - [Bailey Seemangal](https://opencritic.com/critic/9686/bailey-seemangal) - [8.5 / 10](https://noisypixel.net/visions-of-mana-review/) >Visions of Mana marks a triumphant return for the Mana series, offering a richly detailed world with deep lore, an intricate combat system, and robust customization options. While the early pacing may deter some players, those who persist will find a rewarding RPG experience filled with compelling characters, challenging gameplay, and a wealth of content, including a post-game chapter and a New Game Plus mode. Visions of Mana successfully blends classic RPG elements with modern innovations, making it a standout title in Square Enix's lineup. ------------- **[One More Game](https://opencritic.com/outlet/811/one-more-game)** - [Ricki Buzon](https://opencritic.com/critic/8411/ricki-buzon) - [7 / 10](https://onemoregame.ph/2024/08/visions-of-mana-ps5-review/) >Visions of Mana is a welcome entry in the long-running and beloved series, providing an entertaining and fun time for newcomers and fans alike. Surprisingly, one of its strongest points is its compelling story, and while it was simply a journey to the Mana Tree on the surface, the rest of the adventure is one to look out for. > >Previous-gen console players beware because the playthrough is not as smooth. The number of bugs we experienced on a PS4 was not enjoyable, and while the PS5 version was a lot smoother, caution is advised. ------------- **[PSX Brasil](https://opencritic.com/outlet/514/psx-brasil)** - [Thiago de Alencar Moura](https://opencritic.com/critic/3868/thiago-de-alencar-moura) - *Portuguese* - [85 / 100](https://psxbrasil.com.br/analise/visions-of-mana-review/) >Visions of Mana is an excellent JRPG and the purest definition of a comfortable game. With functional and very fun gameplay, a simple story, but with a reflection to deliver and very well executed, make it, quite easily, one of the best (if not the best) games in the series so far. ------------- **[Press Start](https://opencritic.com/outlet/491/press-start)** - [Kieron Verbrugge](https://opencritic.com/critic/4101/kieron-verbrugge) - [7.5 / 10](https://press-start.com.au/reviews/ps5-reviews/2024/08/27/visions-of-mana-review-a-dazzling-trip-to-the-mana-tree/) >Visions of Mana feels like the RPG equivalent of being young and visiting a park in the summer. It's picturesque, warm and full of hope, inviting you to set out and explore and maybe come home with a couple scratches or bruises but always rewarding the effort with a new adventure or discovery. There's a fantastic balance of old and new ideas here, enough to satisfy patient series fans and newcomers alike, a hugely-enjoyable main story, stunning environments and satisfying combat going a long way to make up for some annoying technical and mechanical foibles. ------------- **[Push Square](https://opencritic.com/outlet/25/push-square)** - [Robert Ramsey](https://opencritic.com/critic/932/robert-ramsey) - [7 / 10](https://www.pushsquare.com/reviews/ps5/visions-of-mana) >As a nostalgia-driven retread of the classic Mana adventure, Visions of Mana is rock solid - but it struggles to be anything more than a reminder of how magical those old RPGs could be. If you can look beyond the game's monotonous storytelling and tragically bland characters, the essence of an old-school excursion is here, in the exploration of wonderful environments and in battles against burly boss monsters. ------------- **[RPG Fan](https://opencritic.com/outlet/37/rpg-fan)** - [Izzy Parsons ](https://opencritic.com/critic/8246/izzy-parsons-) - [87%](https://www.rpgfan.com/review/visions-of-mana/) >A wonderful return to form for the Mana series. Visions of Mana will have longtime fans grinning from ear-to-ear. ------------- **[RPGamer](https://opencritic.com/outlet/709/rpgamer)** - [Luis Mauricio](https://opencritic.com/critic/8245/luis-mauricio) - [4.5 / 5](https://rpgamer.com/review/visions-of-mana-review/) >Visions of Mana is a strong entry that effectively revitalizes the lore of the series and keeps it more alive than ever. With dancing merchants, the ring system, and cute creatures such as Sproutlings, the game includes many staples of the series at their best, with Elemental Vessels being a magnificent addition. ------------- **[Spaziogames](https://opencritic.com/outlet/502/spaziogames)** - [Marcello Paolillo](https://opencritic.com/critic/3761/marcello-paolillo) - *Italian* - [6.9 / 10](https://www.spaziogames.it/articoli/visions-of-mana-recensione) >Visions of Mana aims to bring players back to a classic RPG experience reminiscent of the 1990s. Accepting these conditions, you'll still find a pleasant, colorful action RPG that can entertain you for a good number of hours-nothing more, nothing less. ------------- **[TechRaptor](https://opencritic.com/outlet/329/techraptor)** - [Brittany Alva](https://opencritic.com/critic/9635/brittany-alva) - [9 / 10](https://techraptor.net/gaming/reviews/visions-of-mana-review-exceptional-venture) >Visions of Mana features an impactful story, well-written characters, fun combat, and a gorgeous world to get lost in with very few problems. ------------- **[The Outerhaven Productions](https://opencritic.com/outlet/335/the-outerhaven-productions)** - [Matthew Paul](https://opencritic.com/critic/8841/matthew-paul) - [4 / 5 ](https://www.theouterhaven.net/2024/08/visions-of-mana-pc-review-the-dawn-of-a-new-era/) >Visions is an excellent addition to Square Enix's Mana series and fans of the series will be excited with changes presented with the title. That said, the gameplay plays it safe at times, and can be a bit stale at times. Still, if you like the series, you'll enjoy Visions of Mana. ------------- **[Wccftech](https://opencritic.com/outlet/304/wccftech)** - [Kai Tatsumoto](https://opencritic.com/critic/10086/kai-tatsumoto) - [7.5 / 10](https://wccftech.com/review/visions-of-mana-ps5/) >Visions of Mana is a fun JRPG for the first thirty hours but the continuous backtracking and overall padding left me feeling like my time wasn't being respected by the time Val's journey came to a close ------------- **[oprainfall](https://opencritic.com/outlet/775/oprainfall)** - [Steve Baltimore](https://opencritic.com/critic/7353/steve-baltimore) - [4 / 5 ](https://operationrainfall.com/2024/08/27/review-visions-of-mana/) >Despite my few nitpicks I had a great time with Visions of Mana. The story is fantastic and watching these characters grow as the adventure went on was pure joy. The world felt full and there were lots of hidden things to find while exploring each map. The combat is fun and having all the different classes for each character gave it lots of variety. While it took me around 30 hours to complete the main quest I left a lot undone with this one. There were plenty of upgrades, monsters and even a post story that I still need to get to. I feel this one is well worth the $59.99 price tag to fans of the series and newcomers alike. -------------
